We talk about our neighbourhood a lot, and today, on World Museum Day, we want to give credit where it's really due.
🌿A short walk from Little Washer sits one of the most significant sites in all of Ireland - Glasnevin Cemetery and Museum.
Founded in 1832 by Daniel O'Connell, Glasnevin Cemetery was established at a time when Catholics in Ireland had no right to a dignified public burial. What began as an act of defiance became the final resting place of over 1.5 million people, among them some of the most defining figures in Irish history. Michael Collins. Éamon de Valera. Countess Markievicz. Brendan Behan. Luke Kelly.
But it was never just a place for the famous. It is a record of ordinary Irish life, of families, communities, generations, and the Glasnevin Museum brings that story to life in a way that genuinely stops you in your tracks.
Today the museum runs fascinating tours, seasonal events, and exhibitions that connect visitors to Irish history in an immediate, human way. It is one of Dublin's most underrated afternoons out, and it is right here, in our neighbourhood.
