Johnathan Winters — Bellbrook’s own family namesake of the Winters Library, the library in the center of town — always had a soft spot for chickens. His family home on High Street has raised chickens for years, and they still do today.

Winters explained his affection for chickens to late‑night host Johnny Carson while talking about his two‑acre California “ranch.” And honestly, after hearing him tell it, I’ll say what he didn’t:

Chickens are in our DNA.

An update will be posted this weekend on what your options are if you want to Keep Kettering. You do have options.

📍Be wary of quick, over simplified answers that push you in one direction. PEOPLE WHO ANSWER FAST usually are not going over all your options and are superficial.
📍Some maybe much of that advice is self‑serving and not focused on giving you every choice in a fair way.

📍You have choices, and when you’re informed ahead of time, your decisions get better. Not all choices are the same.

📍📍unfortunately, there is a lot of bad advice out there, and if you don’t know all the options, you’re not actually in control of the decisions.

We have been posting less frequently recently, however this is important for many people in Bellbrook and Sugarcreek who are our neighbors who rely on Medicare in particular Anthem Blue Cross Medicare Advantage.

✔️Here is the news for anyone in Bellbrook — really anyone in Ohio — on Anthem Medicare Advantage. Anthem has announced that starting in 2027, they will no longer contract with Kettering Health for Medicare Advantage plans.
✔️This does not affect Medicare Supplement plans — only Medicare Advantage. If you or a loved one uses Kettering doctors, you have a VERY limited window to switch plans before the change hits.
✔️Paying attention now helps avoid any disruption in care or loss of providers. Both Kettering and Anthem are major powerhouses in our area, so this change matters.

✔️By way of explanation, I used to work in Anthem’s senior care division, dealing with Medicare and programs for who are on Medicare due to disability - so this caught my attention.

✔️You might want to share this in case it helps someone you know and care about so they can decide what to do. There are deadlines that need to be met.

🪓Heritage Landscaping at Mead and Stewart Street - close to Sugar Valley Golf Club, sells one of the few herbicides that actually works. Most places don’t carry it — they do.
✔️Go to Heritage Landscaping and tell them what you’re doing. And remember: to remove Tree of Heaven, you must kill the root or it’ll keep coming back.

The how‑to video is officially a wrap, and it’s time to get rid of that nasty tree w**d called Tree of Heaven. Hope to have it posted soon.

Here are two videos, the second video is in the comments. Based on what I’ve learned, this is exactly what I’m doing — and what I’d suggest — to get rid of Tree‑of‑Heaven.

Heritage Landscaping in Sugarcreek Twp out by SugarValley Golf Course has their act together. That’s my go‑to spot.
The second stop is Rural King in Xenia. Know what you want before you walk in to Rural King. The folks there are helpful, but they’re not product specialists. You need to be the one who understands what you’re buying.

Tree‑of‑Heaven does not die easy. If you cut it down, you must treat the fresh cut immediately. Use a paintbrush and apply herbicide across the entire exposed surface. If you don’t kill the root, it will send up new shoots for years — dozens of them. This is a tree that fights back.

And remember: Tree‑of‑Heaven is the preferred host for the spotted lanternfly. Remove the tree, remove the welcome mat. With luck, neither the pest nor the tree will be part of your life.
