The FBI discovered that Martin Hale had been using the identities of dead men before some of them were even officially dead.
For seventeen years, the quiet New Jersey accountant had built a second life out of other people’s names.
Three houses.
Multiple bank accounts.
Different Social Security numbers.
A passport belonging to a man who had been dead for eleven years.
His wife knew none of it.
Neither did his coworkers.
To everyone around him, Martin was painfully ordinary.
He wore gray suits, drove the same dark sedan, and ate lunch at the same diner every Friday.
The case began when federal agents followed a suspicious transfer from a medical-supply company into a consulting account registered to a man named Raymond Cole.
There was one problem.
Raymond Cole had died in a warehouse fire seven years earlier.
Then investigators found a second name in Martin’s records.
Peter Weller, a traveling salesman who vanished on a Pennsylvania highway.
Then a third.
Andrew Pike, whose body had been recovered near the Delaware River.
At first, the FBI believed Martin was simply stealing identities after people died.
Then analyst Lauren Webb compared the dates.
Martin had opened one account in Raymond Cole’s name forty-three days before Cole’s death was officially recorded.
He had applied for credit using Peter Weller’s Social Security number while Weller was still listed as a missing person.
And he had changed the mailing address on Andrew Pike’s retirement account nine days before Pike’s body was found.
That changed everything.
Martin did not appear to be hunting for dead people.
He appeared to know who was going to disappear.
Agents obtained a warrant for a storage unit rented under one of the false names.
Inside they found old wallets, birth certificates, photographs, tax records, work badges, bank cards, and handwritten notes arranged by year.
Some belonged to people police had never connected to Martin.
Several were still officially missing.
And on the final shelf sat a folder marked with a name the FBI did not recognize yet.
The date written beneath it was three weeks in the future.
