While I was growing up, I was labeled as “maarte,” meaning dramatic, high maintenance, picky, EXTRA. There were periods of my life when I tried my hardest to stay under the radar, be more “submissive” in order to be favored, until I realized I wasn’t being true to myself. I thrive the most where my personality is celebrated, not criticized. Where I can be self-expressive while maintaining professionalism. I’d like to believe that’s why I became a chef as a woman in a male dominated field. The qualities that were used as an insult against me have become my greatest strengths.
With being “dramatic”, I can use my loud voice to lead with success WHILE having fun with my coworkers.
Being “high maintenance,” means that I make sure that I take care of myself by not accepting harmful behavior or environments.
Being “picky” means that I have discernment whenever needed to achieve optimal flow at a moments’ notice. It’s a skill developed over time.
I’ve been told that being “extra” is not a flex. Being expressive is what got me to where I am now, having the privilege to operate at my fullest potential. Over the years, I have not stopped sharing who I am with the world. It has led me to build a beautiful community. For that, I am forever grateful. Keep on being maarte, queen 💅✨
