If you’ve been following our FB page for any length of time, you’ll know that Bingham Falls is a bit of a theme for us. We get called there on a horribly regular basis. There’s a pattern to the worst Bingham calls that involves jumpers from the highest point who change their mind about jumping and just as they turn to back off it, whoops, they slip. An uncontrolled fall from that height is disastrous.

This was the situation with today’s call, although our subject got away with a nasty break and nothing life-threatening. He was in a lot of pain so it might take him a while to appreciate how incredibly lucky he was.

This is stating the obvious, but the best way to avoid being hauled out of Bingham on a litter (and potentially transferred to a medevac) is to resist the temptation to go try those big jumps. Here’s the thing: don’t even go check it out, thinking you can back off it. Too many people have died that way.

Things went well today. StoweRescue and Stowe PD were on scene, making our job easier. Bystanders helped move the litter, also making our job easier. And our patient was sweet as pie, apologizing and expressing his gratitude over and over again, as he bit down against the pain. We wish him a straightforward and speedy recovery.

We’ll have hot weather this weekend so let’s enjoy our swimming holes safely. Just think before you think about jumping!

Trail Update: Limited Parking at the Notch Road this week

VAST - Vermont Association of Snow Travelers is hosting a multi-day snowmobiling event based at the entrance to the Notch Road (Route 108 at Barnes Camp, just past the Stowe Resort parking lots), starting today through Saturday, March 5. Parking will be limited in the “Barnes Camp Lot” and there will be snowmobile activity on the road and at Smuggler’s Notch Campground. We suggest avoiding the area, especially on Saturday, and seeking one of these nearby trails for walking, snowshoeing, XC skiing, etc.:

Lake Mansfield Trail, Stowe (moderate)
Beaver Meadow, Morristown (moderate)
Stowe Pinnacle, Stowe (moderate to difficult)
Stowe Recreation Path, Stowe (easy)
Weissner Woods, Stowe (easy)
