Stonington Food Company – End of an Era Marks a New Beginning

Ron Watson has been doing business at 68 Main Steet, Stonington, ME for twenty-eight years. In 1998, he opened the gWatson Gallery there. Ten years later he established the Stonington Ice Cream Company in a small adjacent building. Initially, the Ice Cream Company served only ice cream. Eventually, lobster rolls were offered and a complete menu of take-out sandwiches was added. During Covid, the small shop provided take-out meals in the evening.

In 2024, Watson closed the Gallery and moved the food component of the ice cream shop into what had been the Gallery, returning the ice cream shop to its original solitary purpose, and naming the new venture the Stonington Food Company.

The transition from gallery to food has been intentionally deliberate. June 2026 marks the completion of the change. The Food Company is offering its acclaimed lobster rolls, made-to-order sandwiches, plus grab-and-go items. Breakfast will be served four days a week. Indoor seating is available. Art still hangs. In addition, the expanded business features a Marketplace that includes cheeses, cured meats, seafood, bread, pasta and a variety of domestic and international items, plus a selection of fine wine.

WE ARE HIRING!

The Stonington Food Company is growing. Our ovens will be busy soon. The menu will expand. New products will be available in our marketplace. A wider of selection is fine wine will be on the shelves. Full-time and part-time jobs are available, May through October, with openings in food prep, customer service and baking. Inquire via [email protected].

The Stonington Food Company now offers a selection of fine wines, many of them from French vineyards. We have attempted to get ahead of the pending tariffs before anticipated price increases take effect. Along with the wine, we offer cheeses, cured meats, smoked haddock and salmon, plus a variety of other picnic and home items.

Smoked Haddock Sandwich 😁

Stonington Food Company proudly offers its acclaimed Smoked Haddock Sandwich sandwich using haddock from Stonington Seafood in Stonington, Maine.

Richard Penfold, founder and owner of Stonington Seafood, is a master in the art of smoking seafood. Born in the UK, Penfold learned his craft in Scotland, where he worked for a commercial seafood producer while teaching in the fisheries department at a university. After coming to the US, and prior to creating his own company, Penfold smoked salmon for Stonington Sea Products, Inc, where he gained a national reputation. Besides exclusively offering the Smoked Haddock Sandwich, Stonington Food Company sells Penfold's Finnan Haddie in 16 oz. packaging.
