We have enjoyed bee keeping so much the last few years and the horizontal hives we’ve been running the last several years have some great perks, but so far we’ve not found high honey production to be one of those perks.
So, this year, we knew we wanted to branch out and try a new kind. My dad got to looking at options and found these boxes and they were too cool to not try! The insulating perks they offer were a huge deciding factor along with cost and a few others!

Since then we’ve been following along with a YouTube documentary (a 4th generation bee keeper in Australia, whose dad invented them) is publishing, and have just enjoyed getting to see bits of their journey while we’ve been seeing our bees thrive in their hives!

Being a 4 generation homesteading family or self and mainly father/daughter bee keeping team we love their tight knit family bind and relate with it greatly!

I’ll be sharing more about the assembly of them soon and you’ll be seeing more about them as we use them this summer!!

Just an appreciation post for my moderately reluctant homestead husband who makes all my dreams come true even when he thinks they’re crazy or I’m biting off more than I can chew! 😅😅

He has been putting in some very hard work to make things happen here and in so many other parts of our life and he has no idea I have been silently collecting small snippets of the ways he blessed me day in and day out… but boy does he!

None of this would be possible without him! 💙

This last almost 10 months has been quite the journey.

From the initial concern that our newborn wasn’t gaining weight, to meticulously weighing and tracking every feed, to a scary PICU stay, to months of daily antibiotics and so much in between… this journey hasn’t looked like we’d expected at all.

But through the ups and downs, the fear and the faith, God has been ever present with us. He’s taught us, he’s grown us, he’s sanctified, us, he’s carried us, he’s been our strength and our peace when those things felt so far away.

Last week our little guy had a follow up and finally got to stop his daily antibiotic 8 months after being emergently placed on it in the PICU one very terrifying night at 7 weeks old. For the last 8 months I’ve given him a dose every night before bed and every 2 weeks I’ve had to pick up a fresh bottle. It’s caused unwanted side affects for our little guy but all of our medical professionals felt it was the best choice given the situation, so we did what was best even though it felt yucky and unwanted. It felt so unnatural for me and I wanted so badly for it to not be his situation but it was, and that’s okay.

Last week though, we saw his specialist and he said we no longer need it. We got to stop the antibiotic!!! It felt so therapeutic to throw that last bottle away and sit down to nurse him to sleep that night without having to draw up and give him a a dose!

His medical journey isn’t over, but this is a huge step forward and we are so so thankful! 💙

Every time I wash the sheets I always forget to remake the bed before the end of the day so if you do too…. This is your reminder to go put them back the bed! 🛌 ☺️😅

Happy Mother’s Day to all the Mothers! I have some wonderful women in my life! These 2 make the homestead possible and I couldn’t be more grateful! I didn’t get a picture with my Mother in law yesterday but we are so thankful to have her close too!

Hoping your Mother’s Day was as blessed as mine was! 💜

Well… this video didn’t age well 😂😂😂

It is in fact an overview of our apiary, however…. When we opened our yellow hive right after this video, we quickly found that we were too late to split (we think). We found 2 opened queen cells which means 2 of the many queens the hive had prepared have already hatched. The population is still very large in the hive and so I’m unsure whether they swarmed or if they were actually not “queen right” in the first place. Last weekend when we were doing hive checks we could not locate the queen in this hive and the bees had created but swarm cells and superseder cells so it’s possible that they were replacing their queen or that they were preparing to swarm. (Have I mentioned this is a hobby and we aren’t full on professionals 😅)

As I looked through today I still couldn’t find a queen but we did hear a queen “piping” which was very cool and a unique experience that doesn’t happen often. I was recording so hopefully I caught it on camera and I’ll be able to share in another post soon!)

So, all that to say, we packed them up and left them just as they are. Hopefully if they do swarm or swarm again we will catch them in one of our swarm traps and if not, that’s just the life of a bee keeper! 🤷‍♀️🐝🐝🐝
