I get asked a lot about the name Sno Birds.
It may seem like an odd name for a business in South Alabama, but it actually has a very special meaning to me.
When I decided to start a shave ice business in 2023, I knew I wanted the name to have meaning behind it. Most of you already know this story, but some of you don’t—so I want to share how Sno Birds got its name.
When I was a little girl, I had an Uncle Chris. He was my mom’s brother, and we were very close. He was one of the biggest influences in my life.
While he was in law school at Huntingdon College, he would come home to see me every weekend. He was the only person I would eat well for! Bite by bite, he would fly the food into my mouth and say, “Okay, Baby Bird, open up—here comes the Mama Bird!”
From then on, I was his Baby Bird. 💙
11 years ago TODAY, On September 2, 2015 my “mama bird” passed away from complications with Esophageal Cancer. A day I will NEVER forget.
When I started this business, I knew I wanted to honor him in some way. After pondering the name over and over, I finally decided on Sno Birds. It was only fitting—and it means so much more to me than simply the name of a business.
In 2004, Uncle Chris wrote me a letter filled with wonderful life advice. One thing he wrote has stayed with me:
“In the end, it’s not about what you have but what you gave.”
As an 18-year-old, I didn’t fully appreciate those words at the time. Since then, I have gone back and reread that letter many times, and that quote always stands out to me.
Today, those words are at the heart of Sno Birds and everything we are built around: giving back.
Sno Birds means family, love, and community. It is also a reminder that the things we have here on Earth are only temporary.
In the end, what truly matters is what we give while we are here. 💙
