🇳🇴❄️ Longyearbyen: Where You Can't Be Buried in a Coffin

Deep inside the Arctic Circle, Longyearbyen on Norway's Svalbard archipelago is one of the world's most extraordinary settlements.

You may have heard the claim that “it is illegal to die in Longyearbyen.” But that's actually an urban myth. The reality is even more fascinating.

Because of the extreme Arctic environment and permafrost, traditional coffin burials are not permitted in Svalbard. The frozen ground can slow decomposition and seasonal freezing and thawing can eventually push coffins and buried remains back toward the surface. 🇳🇴❄️

Instead, urn burials are permitted for people who were residents of Svalbard when they died. Ashes may also be scattered in certain areas with permission from the Governor of Svalbard.

So the famous phrase “Don't die in Longyearbyen” isn't literally a law—but the Arctic environment has created one of the most unusual burial systems in the world.

Princess Ingrid Alexandra, second in line to the Norwegian throne, is preparing for an exciting new journey as she begins her studies at the University of Sydney in Australia.

After completing her military service with the Norwegian Army, the Princess has chosen to pursue a Bachelor's degree in International Relations and Political Economy. During her studies, she is expected to step back from many of her official royal duties to focus on university life.

Her decision reflects the modern approach of the Norwegian Royal Family—encouraging education, independence, and real-world experience before taking on greater royal responsibilities.

As Norway's future Queen, this new chapter is expected to provide valuable international experience that will help prepare her for her future role.

🇳🇴 Norwegian Women in Uniform – Strength, Courage & Equality

Norway has long been a global leader in promoting gender equality within its Armed Forces. In 2015, Norway became the first NATO member to introduce gender-neutral compulsory military service, making both women and men equally eligible for conscription.

Today, women serve across every branch of the Norwegian Armed Forces—from the Army and Navy to the Air Force and Special Operations support roles. They lead, train, deploy on international missions, and help safeguard Norway's national security with professionalism and determination.

🇳🇴 The Viking Legacy of Norway – Where Legends Were Born

Long before modern Norway became one of the world's most peaceful and prosperous nations, it was the homeland of the fearless Vikings.

Between the 8th and 11th centuries, Norwegian Vikings sailed across Europe in their famous longships, exploring, trading, and establishing settlements from the British Isles to Iceland, Greenland, and even North America.

One of Norway's greatest historical figures was King Harald Fairhair, who is traditionally credited with unifying Norway into one kingdom around 872 AD after the Battle of Hafrsfjord. This event is widely regarded as the birth of a united Norway.
