Atlantic sea scallops have an incredible way of helping sustain their populations. A single mature female can produce hundreds of millions of eggs during a single spawning season.

Even though only a small percentage of those eggs survive to adulthood, producing such a large number helps ensure future year classes that allow the fishery to be sustainable for years to come.
