Bakery-Adjacent Rant:

Running a small business is hard, and food based businesses have razor-thin margins. On one hand, it’s easy to feel no empathy for a faceless franchise like Crumbl going out of business, but at the end of the day, they do employ a few people in town.

That said, the Buy Local philosophy is really important for the health and well-being of a community, and we have a small, but talented group of bakers and food business in town that can always use your support like Teresa's Morgan Hill Cafe, Lawson's Bakery, Andy's Orchard, Lombardo’s donuts (and the never-ending Hale ave project), and yours truly.

None of us are going to get rich off of this, and we do it because we’re passionate about it. There’s no feeling like seeing your customers when they they take that magical first bite of something new, and their whole face lights up 😊.

This weekend go out and get yourself a treat (yes, you’ve earned it!), and help keep our town’s business alive and thriving. ❤️ 🥐

Ok, off my soapbox and back to baking…

Hi Friends! Fall is officially here! At least, the calendar says so. The thermometer didn't get the memo, and running a bread oven in the middle of a heatwave is apparently our new autumn tradition. We're baking fall anyway. Crank the AC and play along with us.

Pumpkin Bread is back for October. It's shaped like a little pumpkin, cinnamon bark stem and all, and that orange color comes from 100% pumpkin puree and nothing else. Soft, tender, loaded with walnuts and cranberries, with a touch of cinnamon. Our advice: toast a slice and break out the good butter. Stopping at one is harder than it sounds. 🎃. (Check out how we make it here: https://www.facebook.com/reel/1611554547135187 )

New this week: Marbled Ginger Cinnamon Shortbread Cookies. We split a buttery shortbread dough three ways, flavor one with cinnamon, one with ginger and one with dark cocoa, then fold them back together by hand. Every cookie comes out swirled, and there's no food coloring involved. The colors are just the spices. Right now a lot of them are little ghosts, with more shapes rotating in as the season goes on.

And the Browned Butter Coconut Mochi is sticking around! So many of you told us how much you loved it that we couldn't take it off. It's gluten-free, too.

Also on the menu this week:
Polish Apple Cake
Sourdough
Pain de Mie (savory milk bread)
Ube Amaretti Cookies (GF)
Double Chocolate Brownies
Gluten-Free Peach Turnovers

A quick bit of housekeeping: this week's drop text is coming from a new number, +1 (833) 641-2253. A few of you let us know our current platform wasn't notifying you about drops, so we're moving over to Bakeflow.us during the next couple of weeks. Save the number so we don't end up in your spam folder.

The full menu is up at https://HearthAndTart.com. Not on our text list yet? Sign up there and you'll hear from us the moment ordering opens. We only have 12 pumpkin loaves this week, and they tend to go first.

A thousand of you!!!

We crossed 1,000 followers last week, which is a genuinely strange thing to see on a screen when the whole operation is two people, one oven, and a lot of early mornings. Thank you. Every one of those is a person who decided our small bakery was worth paying attention to, and we don't take that lightly.

Last drop was Fan Favorites, the things you keep asking us for. This week we're flipping it. Welcome to OUR Hearth & Tart Favorites: the bakes we love making (You know... the ones we keep tasting over and over "for quality control.")

** The showpieces:

Purple Sweet Potato Haupia Pie. Silky coconut haupia over purple sweet potato. It looks unreal and tastes like a vacation.

Kouign-Amann. Laminated by hand with imported, high quality butter, sugar caramelizing right against the pan into a crackly amber shell. (Lenny will talk your ear off about these if you let him.)

** Breads:
Sourdough. Every bakery has one, we know. Ours is a long, slow ferment and we're quietly proud of it, even though it's not the thing that makes us different.

Savory Milk Bread. Pillowy, faintly sweet, savory on the finish. Best sandwich bread we make and it isn't close.

** The sweets

Polish Apple Cake. September apples, real honey, and warm spice running through a tender crumb. Enough fruit that it barely holds together. This is the one that disappears off our own counter.

Ube Amaretti Cookies. Crackled tops, chewy centers, that gentle vanilla-nutty ube thing going on. Naturally gluten free, which is a nice bonus.

** And two new things

Gluten Free Dinner Rolls. New recipe, and we're really happy with this one. Soft, pull-apart, actually good instead of "good for gluten free." Worth a spot on your table.

Brown Butter Coconut Mochi. Chewy, custardy in the middle, crisp around the edges, with browned butter running through the whole thing so it tastes nuttier and deeper than you expect. Naturally gluten free, and dangerously easy to eat standing over the pan.

Menu is open at HearthAndTart.com. Get on the notify list there and we'll ping you the second it's live, which matters more than usual this week since the kouign-amann never make it to the end of a drop.

If you haven’t been to the Morgan Hill Library lately, you should! They have a great selection of cookbooks.

One of the joys of baking is trying out new recipes, and connecting ideas and methods from various sources into new recipes.

This week, I picked up this beauty. Lots of fun recipes I want to try out here! Can’t wait for all of you to try them 😊
