Would this calf catch your eye?

Happy first day of Spring! Calving season is in full swing!

Cattle genetics is so cool! This calf is a roan because she received one white color gene from her sire and one red gene from her dam. This called codominance- when both the red and white genes show at the same time.

This goes hand and hand with a Management Monday post we did a few months ago. Now, we give you all a literal, visual representation of snow acting as an insulator. Pretty neat!

A quick video about our cattle. The Shorthorns are the majority in the herd, but we do run Red Angus as well. As always, can’t wait to see what the herd looks like two years from now as our first set of Missouri born and bred cattle begin to calve out (and hopefully catapult us ahead).

We have a million things going on as we enter calving season and saying it's been busy is an understatement.
Enjoy this snapshot from today of our squad of "fenceline supervisors" watching us put up new fence.

Supposedly this only works if the cow is 8+ months bred (like this girl)! Have you heard of this? And what is your vote?

The joys of having a few commercials in a sea of registered cattle! Did you know this calf is heterozygous black, meaning he carries both black and red alleles? His black hide definitely steals the spotlight!

We would like to take a moment and spotlight one of our replacement bull calves. Out of a hardworking, proven six-year-old dam, he has been one we have had our eye on since day one.
From an early age, we pay attention to structure, growth, and reproductive soundness- including scrotal development and uniformity.
This calf offers the most impressive scrotal development we have raised to date, with ideal circumference and excellent symmetry.
While this is just one of the reasons we have chosen to retain him, we are hopeful and excited about the role he’ll play in our herd.
The future is bright.

The topic today is: 𝗪𝗲𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴

It’s a controversial topic in the cattle industry. Many believe in weaning at 6-8 months. But here, we practice “late weaning” (at 10-11 months). There’s pros and cons to both, but here’s why we choose this route.

Keeping calves on the cow longer allows cartilage and bone to mature naturally, reducing the risk of abnormal growth and helping maintain the desired phenotype.

Later weaning also means calves rely less on milk. By the time we wean, the cow–calf bond is more emotional than nutritional, making the process easier on both.

After weaning, feed intake increases. Calves nursing and grazing alongside the cow require less feed than earlier-weaned calves, which helps reduce our winter feed costs.

In closing, we would like to make an important point. Not all genetics can perform in a system like this. Each operation has different goals and resources, so what works for us might not work for you. Management decisions should always be made based on what best benefits your cattle and program.
