With each cup Martin’s Coffee and Bakery brews you are supporting both local and global initiatives. Martin’s donates a portion of every item sold to literacy projects in Nepal and Kenya. Coffee for Literacy bridges the literacy gap through school supplies, letters of encouragement, and libraries in rural areas. There is a recent recordings of Nassar interrupting a private interview between Kent Kelso and a reporter at the library on Facebook, I’m trying to get the recording now.

MC3 is a group of unelected individuals who seek to influence and control city government, the citizens of Martin, and the city’s development. Sounds like a familiar tune to me. The roots of corruption trying to grow again.

Good people who have done good things are part of this group. Nick Dunagan and Nassar with Savant Learning Systems are a major part of the founding of this group. They have done great things for this town, just as Brad Thompson who was recently indicted did great things for Martin.

But this is undemocratic and offensive, especially when you look at what recently happened in our town with all the indictments and backdoor deals. 

That is my conclusion after reading their own internal policy document. Don’t take my word for it. Read what they proposed for yourself.

1. It was created for people with “actual leverage” in Martin.

“It is written for the people who have actual leverage in Martin: those who own assets, have deployed capital, carried institutional relationships…”

2. Money, property, and investment are qualifications for membership.

“Active investment in Martin: property ownership, business operation, or institutional deployment of capital.”

3. It was designed to be the private counterpart to the public city committee.

“The VVV committee is the public-facing governance body. MC3 is the private-sector counterpart.”

4. It seeks a formal relationship with city government and access to city information.

“Formal MOU with the city establishing MC3’s standing to interface with city leadership, receive budget and fiscal data…”

5. It would review major development proposals affecting Martin.

“…review major development proposals, and provide written recommendation on strategic plan alignment.”

6. Its members would have special direct access to the mayor or city manager.

“MC3 members have standing to request a direct briefing from the mayor or city manager on any major fiscal or development decision.”

7. It specifically calls for private influence before issues become public.

“Holds city leadership accountable to the strategic plan through direct, private engagement before issues become public crises.”

8. It is designed to maintain influence beyond elections.

“Protects the strategic plan across election cycles. Elected leadership changes. MC3’s institutional memory does not change on the same timeline.”

I asked Courtney to take a picture of me running to celebrate finally getting over one of the hardest and strangest running injuries I’ve had. I interrupted her watching The Princess Diaries for the 100th time, so she was in a bit of a rush. I understand. It’s a classic.

She said I’m lucky it’s this good, and you know what? I do think it’s very artistic if you just squint your eyes and tilt your head to the right a little bit.

This is my 1,147th day of running every day. That doesn’t seem real. I made the decision to run on August 14, 2023.

Right now, I’m nearing the end of the Run the Date challenge. It means you run the month and day for a year, so October is 10 miles a day.

I’ve been really struggling for the past month. I’ve had a really weird injury that left my right foot feeling numb after just running a mile. I took my time, ran very slowly, changed my diet, got more sleep, and checked in with the pros.

The truth is, I really overdid it last month. I gave everything I had and didn’t sleep like I should have, and what do you know? Injury.

So thankful to be on the other side of it. It’s been 4 days, which means 40 miles, and it’s only the normal pain, so praise the Lord!

October 8th is the debate, and I believe a lot will come out about who started it, which candidate they endorse, what its purpose is, and how much of this organization sounds very familiar to old structures of the past.

What is MC3?
Who started it? What does it stand for? What purpose does it serve?
Who is part of it, and why is there so much talk and concern about it?
