A coffee without the face of a farmer is just another product.
Twelve years ago, in August 2014, I (Jonathan Hutchins, Roaster and owner of William & Sons Coffee Co.) spent a day on Wagner Ferrero’s farm in Brazil. Grupo Famiglia Ferrero Wagner welcomed me as if I were family. He fed me, walked me through his fields, shared his story, and patiently showed me every corner of the farm and the many coffee varieties he grows.
One thing I learned during nearly 15 years living in Brazil is this: you can never out-serve a Brazilian when it comes to hospitality.
As Americans, we’re often surprised when someone treats us like honored guests. In Brazil, hospitality isn’t a strategy—it’s a way of life. And coffee farmers embody it in a special way. Their passion for people is matched only by their passion for their craft.
That day with Wagner left a lasting impression on me. His warmth, generosity, and love for coffee shaped the way we think about hospitality at William & Sons. It’s one of the reasons we work so hard to create meaningful experiences for every guest who walks through our doors.
This month, as we purchased coffee from Wagner once again, I had the chance to speak with him. Twelve years later, he hasn’t changed a bit. Still warm. Still humble. Still passionate.
And now we’re honored to share his coffee with you.
