What does it mean to carry a farming legacy that began generations ago?

Meet Lorenzo V. Powell, a sixth-generation Black farmer from Missouri who is continuing a family agricultural legacy that dates back to the era of Emancipation.

Lorenzo’s passion for farming began as a child visiting his family’s farm in Fulton, Missouri. Those early experiences—working with cattle, learning about the land, and hearing the stories of the generations before him—helped shape his purpose.

Today, Lorenzo is carrying that legacy forward through Diamond G. Polled Herefords, established in 1983, where he raises registered Polled Hereford cattle while focusing on quality genetics, maternal ability, and the continued improvement of his herd.

His journey also includes attending Lincoln University, a historically Black college and university (HBCU), while rebuilding his cattle herd alongside his grandfather, now 84 years old.

This is more than a story about farming. It's a story about family, Black history, agriculture, perseverance, land ownership, cattle, HBCUs, generational knowledge, and building a legacy for the next generation.

Lorenzo's message is powerful: honor the past, improve what was entrusted to you, and make sure the legacy continues.

Join us on the OT Radio Show as we talk with Lorenzo V. Powell about his family's farming history, Black agriculture, cattle farming, working alongside his grandfather, and his vision for the future.
