Learning to Stand Again
Last week, I shared how I came to Lincoln after leaving an abusive marriage.
What I didn't share was what happened next.
When I arrived in Lincoln in July 2015, I wasn't just starting over...
I was trying to survive.
My boys and I spent nearly two months at Friendship Home while I figured out what our future would look like. With the support of Friendship Home and a homeless veterans program, I found an apartment and began rebuilding our lives.
At the same time, I was navigating a divorce.
Then came another devastating blow.
My mother had been diagnosed with cancer.
While I was trying to rebuild my life in Nebraska, she was fighting for hers back home. There were days I felt torn between wanting to be with my mother and knowing I needed to create stability for my sons.
Before she passed away, I made her a promise.
No matter what happened, I would stay in Nebraska.
She believed this was where I could build a better future for myself and for my boys. Looking back, I think she saw something in me that I couldn't yet see in myself.
After she passed away, there were days I questioned everything.
I was grieving the loss of my mother, navigating divorce, and trying to figure out how to move forward.
But every time I thought about giving up, I remembered the promise I made to her.
So I stayed.
One day at a time.
One step at a time.
I had no idea where that path would lead.
I didn't know I would return to college, build a career with the federal government, or one day become the owner of Sweet Things by Marcy.
I just knew I had to keep going.
Looking back now, I realize I wasn't just rebuilding my life...
I was building the foundation for the life I was meant to live.
❤️ For Mom.

Next week, I'll share how returning to college, a federal work-study position, and a career with the federal government helped me rediscover confidence—and how an unexpected furlough changed the course of my life forever.
