Unrelated bakery post-
I took my kiddo to see The Outsiders Musical in Louisville last night. This was my 5th and his 3rd.
Want to know why I'm such an advocate for public education and the arts?
Because of moments like this.
Seeing my kiddo fall in love with theatre.
For those of you who don't follow the show, at the end Ponyboy gives a copy of the book to someone in the front row.
My son got it last night. And it made his entire day. Core memory unlocked. He couldn't stop smiling and he read it until he fell asleep on the way home.
He's been singing Great Expectations around our living room for the past 2.5 years and after seeing a local show at Jessamine County Arts Friday and having this amazing experience last night, he's now talking about maybe wanting to sing on stage one day.
And maybe it will happen and maybe it won't.
But Theatre sparks something in you sometimes- confidence and a love and joy that's impossible to find anywhere else and you carry that with you whether you are a performer or not.
It's a safe haven.
I hope Bonale Fambrini corbin drew ross Nolan White and the rest of the cast know that they are doing way more than performing on stage.
They are giving little boys an audience, someone to look up to, and giving them a moment where they think that maybe they can do it, too.
Thank you for an amazing experience!!
Stay gold!

In case you missed my story-
The guidance counselor at our middle school started an initiative a couple years ago. Every morning, he writes messages, draws pictures, etc. on Post-it notes and puts them on a bulletin board outside his office. Students can then go grab a Post-it note off the bulletin board.
This initiative has had such a positive effect on our students and teachers.
However, he needs Post-it notes.
I won't go into all of my thoughts about budget cuts, but I will say that at the end of the day, this is where money should be going in FCPS- to the people who matter most: our teachers and students.
Can you help me fill this bin?

Gonna hop on my soapbox for a second.
For a lot of us, tomorrow is the first day of school for our kiddos.

I've been at both my boys' schools numerous times over the weekend and this week setting up the teachers' lounge, back to school bash, breakfast etc.
And you know who's been there every time?
The teachers. The admin team. The custodians.
They were there on Saturday, setting up classrooms. The front office workers have been there before the sun comes up and haven't left until it goes down getting everything ready.
They could just do the bare minimum and get out of there, but they don't.
I'm sure a lot of you don't know, but teachers are no longer allowed to have wish lists. I could go on and on about how absolutely ridiculous that is, but I won't.
Just know that our teachers and children are paying the price for bad administration at the top.

So if you're able, maybe grab a few extra folders or markers and take them in. Grab a gift card and a little treat. If you can't because we know times are hard- that's ok.
Ask your teacher how you can help and know that help doesn't always have to be something monetary.
At the very least, please please please say thank you.
Tell them how much you appreciate what they are doing.

They are tasked with so much more than teaching abcs.
They are counselors, they bring snacks when kids don't have them, they source winter coats for them.
We ask them to take literal bullets for our babies.

So just remember that, ok?
Tell them thank you. Tell them you appreciate them. And don't just do it on the first day of school.
And also, remember who's voting against our kids and our teachers in November.
