LAREDO, TX - After seeking to honor the citizen heroes of the 6/16 plane crash, taking historic steps toward securing a secondary water source for Laredo’s future, and expanding preparedness efforts against the New World Screwworm, Mayor Dr. Victor D. Treviño is now turning his attention to another long-standing community concern: conditions at the Hamilton Hotel after a resident reached out to him and caused a chain reaction of events.

Mayor Dr. Victor D. Treviño announced that he will personally purchase air conditioning units for residents of the Hamilton Hotel who are found to be in need following an assessment by city staff.

According to the Mayor, he previously used discretionary priority funds to address critical issues at the facility, including repairs to the central air conditioning system and the elimination of a bed bug infestation in an effort to improve living conditions for residents.

Treviño stated that he was informed individual air conditioning units could not be purchased using taxpayer funds under existing funding guidelines. As a result, he has directed Chief Heard to determine how many residents currently require personal cooling units.

Once that assessment is completed, the Mayor said he will use his own personal funds to purchase the necessary units for residents in need.

The announcement comes as concerns continue regarding conditions at the Hamilton Hotel, a property that has faced ongoing complaints and quality-of-life issues over the years.

In addition, with a forecasted heat wave approaching South Texas, Treviño is requesting that affected residents be temporarily relocated to hotels or other suitable air-conditioned facilities while immediate cooling needs are addressed and longer-term solutions are pursued.

The Mayor said the goal is to ensure seniors and vulnerable residents are treated with dignity and have access to a safe environment during the summer months.

Laredo, TX — After seeking to recognize the citizen heroes of the 6/16 plane crash and taking historic steps toward securing a potential secondary water source for the city’s future, Mayor Dr. Victor D. Treviño is now taking a proactive approach in expanding local preparedness efforts against another potential threat: the New World Screwworm.

The Mayor announced additional provisions to the City’s emergency preparedness measures aimed at reducing the risk of the parasitic pest spreading into South Texas. Officials emphasized that there are currently no reported cases of New World Screwworm in Webb County or the City of Laredo, and that the actions are being taken as a precautionary measure rather than a response to an outbreak.

Under the expanded provisions, City departments will increase monitoring and preparedness efforts involving stray dogs, stray cats, and feral hog populations, all of which could potentially serve as hosts if the pest reaches the region. The City will also work alongside local, state, and federal partners to strengthen surveillance, public education, and prevention strategies.

In addition, the declaration directs City staff to pursue funding opportunities for a feasibility study examining whether Laredo’s existing Biosafety Level-3 laboratory could be retrofitted to support sterile fly production, a technique widely used in New World Screwworm eradication efforts.

Mayor Treviño stated that prevention and preparedness remain the focus, noting that early action can help reduce future risks and protect livestock, pets, wildlife, public health, and the regional economy.

The announcement comes as Texas and federal officials continue monitoring the threat of New World Screwworm following concerns about the pest’s movement northward from affected areas in Mexico.

Treviño, Congressman Henry Cuellar, and State Representative Richard Peña Raymond signed a Letter of Intent with JasperRuth Ranch Water Operating LLC on Thursday, marking a proactive & major step toward evaluating what could become Laredo’s FIRST alternative water source.

City officials emphasized that Laredo currently has a strong water supply and that the effort is not a response to a current shortage. Instead, the project is focused on long-term planning as the city continues to grow and expand.

The agreement begins the next phase of evaluating a potential secondary water supply that could help support Laredo’s future water needs for decades to come.

As the nation’s largest inland port continues to experience growth, local leaders say exploring additional water resources is an important part of ensuring the city’s long-term resilience and sustainability.
