What is Local News Day?
It’s a national movement, and Lansing is part of it
LANSING, Ill. – The Lansing Journal will be joining other organizations to celebrate Local News Day. Our celebration is Saturday, April 4, at Kdulche Cafe.
Is Local News Day important? Yes. Americans overwhelmingly say local news is essential to democracy and to their daily lives. Yet many readers are unaware of all the challenges facing small newsrooms in small towns.
Local News Day helps remind and reconnect people with the trusted local news sources they might be taking for granted.
Here’s something worth celebrating: Together we have kept this newspaper going since 2017. Through changes in local government, through a worldwide pandemic with local impacts, through local business closings and openings, through changes we couldn’t have imagined when we started this journey — Lansing is still a town with a newspaper.
So many small communities don’t have local news, and even larger, more established newspapers are shutting their doors these days. The fact that Lansing has a local newspaper supported by the community is worth celebrating.
