Hi !
This is Susan from the owner here at Starv'n Marv'ns.

We have been working on some exciting things, and thought it would be good to share with you.

Most of our community probably have heard that we are second chance employer. We are purpose driven here intentionally transforming lives and renewing our community. There has been remarkable , beautiful and amazing transformations so far . We want there to be many, many more .

This last 18 months have been roller coaster ride ..ups and downs twist and turns . There is something way beyond me ( us) that drives us forward in the mission..and purpose here .

The purpose here isn't about just learning what it takes to be successful in a workplace, although that is part of it . It isn't just about learning to value and love the people in our lives, although that is part of it ..its about investing in the lives of the people we are blessed with . Its not a program..its a life long commitment to make a lasting impact . Rooted and grounded in love.

I am pleased to announce that our non-profit..the Bruised Reed foundation has obtained the 501 C3 needed to be recognized as a legitimate non-profit. For years and especially the last 18 months non profit work has been going on within the for profit Starv'n Marvin's. The nonprofit model has been proven effective here , years of many lasting transformations. Restaurant margins are very tight and just doesn't support the outreach we've been doing. We aim to level up in order to help the ones that need it most in our community inside and outside of Starv'n Marvin's with every aspect of becoming secure and successful members of our community.

If you are looking for a cause to support,
I encourage you to check out the Bruised Reed foundation website. As always the best way to support our mission is to come in and let us serve you. Its an honor for us to do that . When a community links arms amazing things happen. All donations are tax deductible

Hi ,
This is Susan , I'm the owner of Starv'n Marv'ns and the founder of the Bruised Reed foundation. Last week I posted an employee highlight and afterwards received a text from one of my servers named Marti ..she wants to share her story . Although our journey to love Marti is just beginning at Starv'n Marvin's , her story is powerful and needs to be told . Here is what she wrote....

Last year, I reached one of the darkest points of my life. After years of struggling with my mental health, I became so overwhelmed and hopeless that I attempted to end my life.

That’s part of my story, but it isn’t the end of my story.

For a long time, I struggled to trust people, trust systems, or even believe that there was a place for me in the world. I isolated myself. I was angry. I was hurting. And I couldn’t imagine that my life could become something different.

Today, I am still growing, still healing, and still learning who I am on the other side of survival.

Getting a second chance doesn’t mean everything suddenly becomes easy. Sometimes a second chance simply means waking up the next day and deciding to keep going. Sometimes it means allowing someone to believe in you before you fully know how to believe in yourself.

That’s one reason being part of this workplace means so much to me. This is a place built around the idea that people are more than the hardest chapters of their lives — whether those chapters include addiction, mental illness, incarceration, homelessness, trauma, or simply losing their way.

I am honored to share my story because somewhere there may be another person who feels as hopeless as I once did.

I want that person to know this:

Please don’t decide what the rest of your life will be based on one unbearable chapter.

I’m still here.

And I’m very grateful I stayed. Marti.

Marti's story is a call to get our priorities in order. We tend to complicate and distract ourselves with so many things that dont matter..we are called Love God with our whole heart, soul, mind and strength and love each other more than we do ourselves. What a different world this world be if we truly did that. My intention is to show Marti that her life is precious, she is valuable and has purpose. Would you join me in prayer for her and anyone who believes they have lost hope.

Consider..hope is not something we can lose , because we can not lose something that comes from God ...what we lose is perspective.

Employee highlight...

Redemption..

We live in times where we are overwhelmed by the news of terrible crimes and evil prepertrated towards children. It seems the more we hear of it the less sensitive we become. We become numb to it . Have you ever wondered what happens to the children that suffer intense abuse as they grow and become adults .

Meet Justin..with his permission ill share his story. Justin is the product of a miserable childhood. Betrayed by the ones that were supposed to love and protect him in unthinkable ways . Justin left his childhood home at 16 and quickly fell into the wrong crowd ..addiction followed . With that homelessness and incarceration. Things started to change for Justin when his grandpa was passing away ( Justin was 25 years old) his grandpa was the one family member that Justin could trust and could count on . It was a devastating loss. It was a turning point for him. Justin didn't want to continue down a dark path.

Something breaks inside a person who suffers abuse. That is intensified when the abuse starts early in childhood. It writes on the slate of who you are . I know no matter how many times he's told that he is enough, and that he is valuable. His Inner dialog most likely saying if my own parents don't love and value me , I must be worthless. It also causes deep seeded problems with trust , confusion about things like love, family, compassion, morality. It's humiliating. It leaves emptiness and pain..a lifelong pursuit to dull it ..and find some kind of identity other than brokenness.

Justin and I meet a year and 1/2 ago when I 1st took over here at Starv'n Marvin's. He started in the dish pit , and ended up transitioning to the line. It hasn't been easy for him as he's never had any restaurant experience..but he has and is persevering. Justin is a very reliable employee he listens and gives 100 percent but my favorite thing about him is his temperament. He is one of the kindest, patient, gentle people I know. That personality comes in handy outside of here when he's coaching his special needs stepson in special Olympics.

My prayer for him is that as he untangles the mess inside his mind that intense childhood abuse has caused he'll come to realize that what was intended for evil, God intends for good. Nothing that he has endured will be in vein. His life has purpose...he is FULLY known and FULLY loved . I pray that he'll begin to understand that his true identity is found in Christ and how he loves other people and not by the evil he endured as a child. I believe that we cannot redeem ourselves, and it doesn't come from other people, it comes from above and once you're in the palm of God's hand , there is nothing or no one that can change that. I see how Justin loves his family, his coworkers and the kids he coaches in special Olympics. He is a true overcomer and my hero. .....

Justin's story is a reminder that there are people amongst us that have or are currently enduring incredibly hard things. A reminder to let go of self centereness and start loving, serving and investing in the lives of the people around us. Not to be offended by every little thing but look past offense into the pain of the people around us and meet them there.

Justin doesn't have much when it comes to biological family. But Justin has found family at Starv'n Marv'ns. People that love and value him
This is what Starv'n Marvin's family restaurant is about..

The best way to support us is to come in , enjoy a meal ..meet and be served by our incredible staff . If you don't live here and would like to still support out mission here is a link to our website..
