It is a variation of an earlier, gin-based cocktail called simply an Alexander. The cocktail known as Alexander today may contain gin or brandy. Ice cream can be added for a "frozen Brandy Alexander".

When going on the Belgian seaside this was my favorite restaurant .... a little video they have uploaded unfortunately in Dutch (Dutch part of the country) and with subtitle in French. It was the place my mother & I used to go every week end on the way to the beach ..... she has now been gone for 36 yrs and I haven't been back since ... here's the video
