The former Royal Garden of King Kamehameha enjoyed a wet year that produced an abundance of rich, smooth Kona coffee.

Harvest time - Our three year old Bourbon coffee trees are starting to produce, which should provide a rich buttery coffee with chocolate and light fruit accents.

Nestled on the slopes of Mt. Hualalai, the Konarex Coffee Farm occupies a site that once served as the Royal Garden of King Kamehameha. At 2,000 feet, the coffee plants are both protected and nourished by the clouds that blanket the farm every afternoon. Being located at the perfect elevation and climate for raising coffee means Konarex Coffee doesn’t suffer from too much sun or lack of moisture. That’s why Konarex Coffee provides a smooth, rich flavor without the harshness of sun saturated coffees.

Coffee Quiz – Here’s a simple true or false quiz to test your coffee knowledge.
1) T F Dark roasted coffee has more caffeine than light roasted coffee.
2) T F A medium roast has more coffee flavor than a dark roasted coffee.
3) T F Better coffees have a strong bite.
4) T F Once roasted coffee will last for years.
5) T F Kona coffee is too expensive for everyday consumption.
First = False – The process of roasting coffee burns off caffeine. The more a coffee is roasted the less caffeine it has. Caffeine also contributes to bitterness, so coffee roasters burn off the caffeine and coffee flavor of inferior beans by making them into a darker roast.
Second = True – Professional coffee tasters test coffee at a light/medium roast. They want to sample the true flavor and acidity of the bean. Over roasting coffee substitutes the burned flavor for the coffee flavor. Lesser quality beans need to be dark roasted to compensate for their deficiencies.
Third = False – Bitter coffee with a harsh taste and high acidity is a sign of an inferior coffee. A small amount of acidity enhances the flavors, but a strong bite in your coffee means you’re not drinking high quality coffee.
Fourth = False – Coffee is perishable. It can be stored in a cool, dark place for up to two months. Some people like to freeze coffee to extend its expiration date, while others complain that freezing alters the taste.
Fifth = False – Kona coffee costs less than one dollar a cup. The next time you order a $4 cup of coffee, taste it for bitterness and whether the roasted flavor dominates the coffee taste. Then pour yourself a smooth rich cup of Kona coffee and realize, you could have saved yourself over $3. Plus you would have enjoyed a better cup of coffee.

5 correct – time to order a few pounds of How Dad Wasted Our Inheritance
4 correct – Superior performance & on your way to becoming a coffee connoisseur
3 correct – Impressive first effort. Keep increasing your coffee knowledge
2 correct – Just average - you need more time drinking quality coffee
1 correct – Keep spending $4 a cup at the ubiquitous java provider
0 correct – Really? You know nothing about coffee? Drink tea.

Coffee Connoisseurs - The American palate has been trained to consider heavily roasted, bitter coffee provided by the corner coffee merchant as the gold standard. When using inferior beans, a dark roast is necessary to remove the bitterness and substitute the roasted flavor for the bean flavor. By blending a variety of beans, flavors of the different beans compensate for the deficiencies in each group of beans, but a high quality coffee will be less bitter with a distinctive flavor not masked by other beans.

There is nothing wrong with having a familiar cup of java, but don’t mistake it for superior coffee. Serving Two Buck Chuck with dinner and Twinkies for dessert might not make your Christmas dinner, nor should the offerings of a ubiquitous java purveyor be mistaken for premium coffee.

To adequately enjoy a good cup of coffee, it’s necessary to prepare it properly. Starting with untainted, filtered water and using a coffee appliance that doesn’t have years of residue from previous use is essential. Don’t put good coffee in a $29 coffee maker. The true flavor of coffee won’t be realized if you’re dripping warm water on any coffee. To bring out the flavor of the coffee beans, it’s necessary to heat the water to over 200 degrees and allow it to steep for at least four minutes before drinking. A French press style coffee maker is one of the better ways of bringing out the true flavor of good coffee.

In the 1800s, coffee was introduced to the Big Island, and the Kona area gained a reputation for high quality coffee. At the 1873 World’s Fair in Vienna, Kona coffee received an award for excellence. Kona’s flavorful and low acidic beans crushed the competition and established the Kona Coffee Belt as the world’s premier coffee growing region. Today you can still get world class coffee from our farm.

Konarex offers estate coffee, which means all the beans were grown on the farm and lovingly prepared for your consumption. Each bean is hand-picked at the peak of ripeness, then pulped, washed, sun dried, hulled, aged, and then roasted to perfection. Each cup provides a distinctive rich flavor with hints of citrus, chocolate, and nuttiness that’s unique to our farm. Due to our higher elevation, our beans are less acidic yet provide full-bodied coffee flavor. Large coffee mills buy beans from many farms which blends the flavors of a variety of beans, but Konarex Coffee remains committed to maintaining the estate coffee experience.
