I’ve seen quite a bit of backlash lately toward small business owners using AI and ChatGPT to create flyers, edit posts, generate images, and help with other marketing materials. The usual argument seems to be, “Hire a graphic designer” or “Learn to do it yourself.”
And while I absolutely appreciate the skill and creativity that professional designers bring to the table, there’s something that sometimes gets overlooked: many small businesses simply don’t have the budget to hire a graphic designer, and we don’t necessarily have the time to learn every design program out there.
We’re busy running our businesses, making our products, answering messages, ordering supplies, doing bookkeeping, packaging orders, cleaning, delivering, and about a hundred other things. Personally, I’d much rather spend those extra hours in the kitchen baking for you than learning another design tool to create a flyer that will probably end up in the trash anyway. 😉
So here’s my take: unless you’re willing to pay significantly more for small-business products to cover the cost of outsourcing every little marketing task, I think it’s perfectly reasonable for us to use the technology available to us to make our businesses more efficient.
I use technology to optimize my own work and keep my prices as reasonable as I can. That means you’ll see AI-generated content from me every now and then. And just to be clear, “AI-generated” doesn’t mean I typed three words and magically got a finished post. I still have to come up with the idea, write the message, create and refine the prompts, review and edit the result, make sure it actually represents my business, and then post it.
That takes time too — time I’d much rather spend baking for you. ❤️
There’s no realistic way to completely avoid AI anymore. It’s becoming part of everything from social media algorithms to business tools and everyday technology.
So yes, I’ll continue using the tools available to me. My priority is creating good products, serving my customers, and keeping my small business affordable — and I don’t think using AI to help with the marketing side of that takes away from any of it.
I just had to make my view clear. 😊
