Musician Steven Gellman has been performing at The Frederick City Market for 10 years so chances are you’ve heard his folk music (and seen his cute pup, Oscar!) while you’ve visited the market. Recently, Steven took a few minutes to share with us how he became a musician:
“I started at the end of high School with a dime-store guitar and the sheet music to Joan Jett’s “I Love Rock ’n’ Roll.” I taught myself to play and sing with one thought in mind - to be in a rock band. But my rock ’n’ roll dreams came with a John Denver-ish voice and I soon found my passion for folk music. I founded the ’90s folk-rock trio Diamond Rose and when the band broke up, as first bands are apt to do, I struck out on my own and haven't looked back since.
I enjoy playing both covers and writing original music inspired by change of seasons, books, animals and real life events. I have eight albums of original music and two additional holiday records. I'm also an author and my debut novel Somewhere in Nowhere came out just a few months ago. My favorite covers to sing are from the '60s and '70s from artists like Phil Ochs, Fleetwood Mac and Linda Ronstadt. I also adore singing old Irish tunes.”
On Sundays when he’s taking a break from performing, you can catch Steven checking out Just Amazing Cafe for some yummy vegan goodies. As Steven told us, “You don't listen to folk music for the beat. You listen for the stories the songs tell.” We can't wait to listen to more of his stories at The Frederick City Market!
