Today marks 25 years since September 11, 2001.

It’s hard to believe it has been a quarter of a century.

I was 14 years old when it happened. Like so many people, I can still remember that day, the confusion, the fear, and watching something unfold that, at that age, was difficult to fully comprehend. It became one of those moments where you remember where you were and how the world suddenly felt different afterward.

Nearly 3,000 people went to work, boarded airplanes, responded to an emergency, or simply started an ordinary Tuesday morning and never came home.

Today and every day, we remember them.

We remember the firefighters, police officers, EMTs, dispatchers, and ordinary people who ran toward danger to help complete strangers. We remember those who lost their lives that day, those whose lives were forever changed, and those who later lost their lives from illnesses and injuries connected to the rescue, recovery, and cleanup efforts.

We also remember the men and women of our Armed Forces who answered the call in the years that followed. Thousands left their families and lives at home to serve our country in the wars that followed September 11. Many never came home. Many more returned carrying wounds, both visible and invisible, that would remain with them for the rest of their lives.

And we say thank you to the men and women who continue to serve and protect our communities and our country every single day. To our first responders and members of our Armed Forces, past and present, and especially those who made the ultimate sacrifice, thank you.

Twenty-five years later, may the passing of time never diminish the significance of that day, the lives that were lost, or the sacrifices made in the years that followed.

September 11, 2001.

Never forget.

There’s a big difference between WANTS and NEEDS.

You may WANT a vacation to Hawaii.

You may WANT a new truck.

You may WANT to finally finish that project you’ve been ignoring for six months.

But what do you actually NEED?

Probably a jar of Pitfire Smoked Salsa.

Maybe a bottle of BUZZED Honey Bourbon Marinade & Glaze.

And if you’re local, there’s a very strong possibility that you NEED some Tipsy Monkey Banana Pudding.

We don’t make the rules. We just make questionable financial decisions involving smoked food, bourbon flavors, and banana pudding easier to justify.

Vacation can wait.

Your taste buds have needs.

Meet the newest Saucy Beard creation: Tipsy Monkey Banana Pudding.

This isn't your average banana pudding.

We're talking bourbon-infused French vanilla pudding layered with vanilla wafers and brown-sugar caramelized bananas, then topped with whipped cream and our toasted bourbon brown-sugar wafer crumble.

And yes... it's as good as it sounds.

Tipsy Monkey is still officially in the R&D stage, so before we add it to the Saucy Beard menu, we need a few more taste testers.

I've got 6 FREE samples available for the first 6 people who want to give one a try. All I ask in return is your honest feedback.

Samples can be picked up in Berwick, or I can arrange drop-off in very localized areas around Berwick or Somersworth.

Comment below if you want one!

Sorry in advance for the long, slightly rant-style post, but stick with me. There's some truth in all of this, plus a little behind-the-scenes look at how Saucy Beard BBQ actually operates and what growth could eventually mean for us and our customers.

Everyone wants to know why everything is so damn expensive.

Usually the conversation turns to Washington, Republicans, Democrats, oil companies, wars, interest rates or corporate greed. And yes, all of those things play a role.

But there's another part nobody really wants to talk about:

We've built an incredibly expensive version of "normal."

We're constantly being sold the next thing we supposedly need. New phones, trending products, gadgets, expensive vehicles, the newest smoker or griddle, Amazon purchases we didn't know existed until an influencer showed us one.

Social media basically turned keeping up with the Joneses into keeping up with millions of Joneses.

At the same time, we've normalized financing everyday purchases. Affirm, Afterpay and Klarna can turn something we can't afford today into "4 easy payments." One small payment doesn't seem like much until you have six of them.

Then there are vehicles. Plenty of people used to drive a $3,000 to $5,000 be**er because that's what they could afford. It wasn't pretty, but it was paid for. Now a $50,000+ vehicle can feel affordable because the conversation becomes, "Can you handle $700 a month for 72 months?" Add insurance, interest, maintenance and fuel and that payment becomes a serious chunk of the household budget.

Then pile on streaming services, apps, cloud storage, delivery memberships, premium subscriptions, convenience fees and service fees. None of them individually break the bank, but together they're a constant drip out of the checking account.

Meanwhile, businesses aren't immune to any of this.

We've understandably pushed for better wages, but businesses are also paying more for insurance, utilities, equipment, ingredients, materials, credit-card fees, theft and shrinkage, vandalism and supply-chain costs.

Those costs eventually show up in the price of whatever we're buying.

That doesn't mean every price increase is justified or that businesses never take advantage of consumers. It just means there's usually a lot more behind a price tag than we see.

Here's where I can give you a real example from Saucy Beard BBQ.

Someone sees a $15 BBQ plate and might think, "$15 for that?"

What they don't see is everything surrounding that meal.

The meat, trimming, seasoning, hours of smoking, fuel, sides, packaging, insurance, food-safety supplies, cleaning, loading, delivery, credit-card fees and then cleaning everything again afterward.

Take brisket. We pay for the entire raw brisket, including pounds of fat that get trimmed away. Then we lose considerably more weight during cooking through rendered fat and moisture loss. What we can actually sell is far less than the weight we originally paid for.

Factor in all the other expenses and the hours invested, and there are plenty of times a small food business owner is effectively working for less than minimum wage.

But here's the important part:

Volume changes the equation.

If we're already firing a smoker and driving a delivery route, adding more orders doesn't multiply every one of those costs equally.

The same applies to our sauces, seasonings, marinades and other products. More volume creates opportunities for larger production runs, better purchasing power and eventually better distribution.

That's where we'd love to see Saucy Beard go.

Maybe someday getting your favorite Saucy Beard sauce or seasoning is as simple as adding it to your normal grocery order.

Growth can also give us more room for better pricing and specials, more delivery opportunities, better equipment, more products and an overall better experience for our customers.

And helping us get there doesn't always require spending money.

Tell your friends or family about us. Leave a review if you've had a good experience. Share a post. Recommend us when someone is looking for BBQ or a good sauce.

Those little things matter.

Awareness creates demand. Demand creates volume. Volume creates efficiency.

Growth shouldn't just make a business bigger. Done right, it should make the business better and easier for its customers to access.

Now, before someone points out the obvious contradiction here, I'm not saying people should stop eating out, buying BBQ, owning a nice truck, subscribing to Netflix or spending money on things they enjoy.

That would be a pretty ridiculous argument for someone who sells BBQ and BBQ products to make.

The point isn't to stop spending money. It's to recognize the difference between the cost of living and the cost of the lifestyle we've chosen to live.

If you can afford the new truck and it makes you happy, buy it. If you love eating out every Friday, do it. If you've got six streaming services and use every one of them, great.

But those are still choices.

And when enough optional expenses become normalized, financed and eventually viewed as necessities, our perception of what it costs just to "get by" changes with them.

That doesn't erase the very real increases in housing, groceries, healthcare, utilities or other necessities. Government policy, energy, interest rates, corporate behavior, wages and business operating costs absolutely matter too.

It's not one or the other.

Maybe part of the uncomfortable truth is simply that the actual cost of necessities has gone up while our definition of a normal lifestyle has gotten more expensive at the same time.

And those two things hitting household budgets together hurt.

So what do you think? How much of today's cost-of-living problem is actual inflation, and how much is lifestyle inflation?

Where do you draw the line between things genuinely becoming unaffordable and our definition of "normal" becoming too expensive?

Okay… these might need to make another appearance.

We spent a little time today playing around with something new. Big, smoked BBQ meatballs finished with our new BUZZED Honey Bourbon Marinade & Glaze.

And these things were absolutely killer.

We made this first batch BIG. About 1½ times the size of a golf ball. Stuffed them with cheddar, put them on the smoker, and let BUZZED do its thing toward the end of the cook.

The result was a smoky, juicy meatball with that sweet, tangy honey-bourbon glaze caramelized over the outside.

Now, we're already changing one thing next time.
The cheese is gone.

It sounded great on paper, and don't get us wrong, melted cheddar inside a smoked meatball certainly isn't bad. But quite a bit escaped during the cook, stuffing every meatball adds another production step, and after tasting them both ways…the meatball and BUZZED were already doing all the heavy lifting.

Sometimes simpler really is better.

We'd also make them a little smaller if these ever found their way onto a Saucy Beard BBQ menu.

Here's the other part:

We keep quite a few of our recipes close to the chest. But this one?

We might actually give it to you.

We're thinking about releasing the full Saucy Beard smoked meatball recipe so you can make these at home — with BUZZED, of course.

And if you'd rather skip making them altogether…

Maybe we need to find an excuse to put these on the menu one day.

What do you think — release the recipe, release the meatballs…or both?

We're more than just a BBQ sauce company.

BBQ sauces and dry rubs will always be a big part of Saucy Beard, but we also know something else: not everybody is a big BBQ sauce person. Not everybody has a shelf full of dry rubs.

Marinades are a different animal.

They're something almost anyone can work into everyday cooking. Steak tips on a Wednesday night. Chicken on the grill. Pork chops. Beef. Seafood. You don't need a smoker, a competition cook or an all-day BBQ to have a reason to reach for a good marinade.

So we're expanding.

Introducing the first entry into a new Saucy Beard marinade line:

BUZZED — Honey Bourbon Marinade & Glaze

A sweet and savory blend built around real honey and bourbon flavor, with Dijon, garlic, onion, black pepper and warm spices bringing everything together.

Use it as a marinade before cooking, reserve some clean BUZZED and brush it on toward the end, or use it simply as a finishing glaze.

And yes, that bearded bee with a glass of bourbon is staying.

The recipe is being put through its final real world testing now, including steak tips tonight, and the label design is ready to go.

Here's where you come in.

If there's enough interest in BUZZED, we'll put it on the site for preorder and get the first production batch underway.

And BUZZED doesn't have to be the last one.

What could come next?
Garlic Herb
Sweet & Savory Teriyaki
Smoky Maple
Zesty Citrus Pepper
Carne Asada
Or something completely different? Tell us what you'd buy.
