How to survive a 12 hour off shore Mexican fishing trip in August. -
#1- check weather the night before . 95 degrees with 65% humidity is the threshold , any hotter than chances are you WILL die of Sunstroke .
#2- No matter how bad ass an off shore fisherman you are, you are NOT a Mexican. This can kill you.
# 3 NEVER “Tap-out” and ask them to take you in. You chose to ride this bull , you drew this card , once the gate opens you take the ride.
# 4 even if you’ve had enough - Its 4 hours home, the Mexican coast guard doesn’t, care about your sorry ass. And your gonna make ALL American fishermen look weak.
# 5 pray for a fish- it will often give you the will to survive.
# 6 - a medical kit can help, but should only consist of a tourniquet and some good drugs , Only complain about a cut if you’ve cut an artery , even then casually apply tourniquet and continue fishing, the “ good drugs” will not help you survive Sunstroke but a least you,ll die smiling.
# 7 ( think this one saved me) soak a handkerchief in ice water and put on head or around neck.
# 8 And remember If you do die - ask to hold the rod in your last breath -
Spare the rod / spoil the death.
