Your resume needs to show how good you are at your job, but it's all too easy to slip into a mode where you simply just start listing your duties. For example:

1. Attended group meeting and recorded minutes

2. Worked with children in a day-care setting

3. Updated departmental files

These are more or less listing things you did in your job instead of telling the employer your accomplishments in your current role. One of the most basic resume tips is to go beyond showing what was required and demonstrate how you made a difference at each company, providing specific examples. Employers are looking for statements more like these:

1. Recorded weekly meeting minutes and compiled them in a Microsoft Word file for future organizational meetings.

2. Developed 3 daily activities for preschool-age children and prepared them for a 10-minute holiday program performance.

3. Reorganized 10 years' worth of files, making them easily accessible to department members.

If you are ever struggling with how to put more specifics into your statements, ask yourself these questions to help you out:

1. How did you perform the job better than others?

2. What were the problems or challenges faced? How did you overcome them? What were your results? How did the company benefit from your performance?

3. Did you receive any rewards, special recognitions, or promotions as a result?

Common Resume Mistakes Job Seekers make that can limit their Job Search - Part 1:

Typos and Grammatical Errors are one of the most common mistakes made on a resume. As an experienced recruiter this is the number one mistake that can turn off any potential employer. Employers will read between the lines and draw not-so-flattering conclusions about you, like, "This person obviously doesn't care to make an impression," or "This person can't write."

Lack of Specifics is another common error made. Your resume shouldn't simply state the obvious to a hiring manager. Employers need to understand what you've done and accomplished. For example:

A. Worked with employees in a restaurant setting.
B. Recruited, hired, trained, and supervised more than 20 employees in a restaurant with $2 million in annual sales.

Both of these phrases could describe the same person, but the details and specifics in example B will more likely grab an employer's attention.

Now try not to make the mistake of wordiness, make your statements to the point without rambling on. This will make your resume stand out, but not look wordy and cluttered.

I have been in the HR Field for 10 years now and I cannot tell you how many times I had an interviewee show up without their updated resume or no resume at all. I always received the same typical response, "I didn't think I needed it."

When most people think of creating or updating a resume it usually means they are looking for new employment. WRONG!! There are many reasons why you should create or update your resume today, even if you're not actively seeking new employment. Here are some great examples:

1. Your current employment situation can change at any moment (the company is acquired, sold or going out of business)

2. Your current employer might request an updated resume from you (company is under a Request for Proposal (RFP) or applying for a grant and requires info about the company's current employees)

3. Your looking for a promotion or internal transfer (most employees don't think that a resume is required in these situations, but most of the time they are, especially if you work for a company that has clients outside of the company that you will be working with)

4. Some companies require an updated resume with your annual performance review. This is a great time for you to focus on your accomplishments in your current role.

5. Resumes are a great networking tool. You never know when you will meet someone that might be interested in learning more about your accomplishments and qualifications that will lead you to new opportunities.

6. In today's market you might even get an email or call from someone that is recommending you for a position that you didn't even apply for.
