Castmember secrets: did you know? 🏴‍☠️
Pirates of the Caribbean almost wasn't a ride at all.
Walt originally envisioned it as a walk-through wax museum-style attraction — guests strolling past pirate scenes, not sailing past them.
So what changed? Disney's work on the 1964–65 New York World's Fair. The Audio-Animatronics technology and show-building techniques Imagineers developed there gave them the tools to think bigger — and Pirates evolved into the elaborate boat ride we know and love today. ⚓
Here's the part most guests never learn: when the ride opened in 1967, some of the "skeletons" scattered throughout weren't props at all — the Disneyland version originally used real human skeletons on the attraction. Disney's prop department eventually swapped them for artificial ones, but for years, real bones sailed right past you in the dark. 💀
