Hauʻoli lā hānau e Queen Liliʻuokalani. Today we celebrate the birth of Hawaiʻi’s first queen regnant and last sovereign monarch, born Lydia Liliʻu Loloku Walania Kamakaʻeha on September 2, 1838

Today marks Lā Hoʻihoʻi Ea, or Sovereignty Restoration Day, marks a pivotal moment in Hawaiian history when the sovereignty of the Hawaiian Kingdom was restored.

This celebration became one of the first national holidays of the Hawaiian Kingdom, alongside Lā Kūʻokoʻa (Hawaiian Independence Day), honoring the resilience, identity, and enduring spirit of the Hawaiian people.

It also feels like a fitting time to honor Haunani-Kay Trask, whose voice helped ignite and shape the modern Hawaiian sovereignty movement.

A Native Hawaiian activist, educator, poet, author, and professor emerita at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, she inspired generations to reclaim Hawaiian history, culture, and self-determination.

To many, she was a controversial figure. To me, she was something else entirely a woman of immense mana, a powerful “Aunty” whose wisdom, courage, and unwavering commitment left a lasting mark. She passed five years ago this month, but her presence is still deeply felt in the ongoing pursuit of Hawaiian independence and justice.

Haunani-Kay Trask shirt in bio.

Aloha,

We’re beyond excited to announce the 4th Annual Queens Hawaiian May Day 🌺

Honestly… it’s wild that this is already Year 4! Whhhaaat?

What started as Kau Kau Coffee’s small mission to share a piece of Hawaiian culture with NYC through a cup of coffee, a piece of mochi, and 🌺aloha spirit has grown into a full community street festival in the heart of Astoria, Queens.

In Hawai‘i, May Day is a celebration of culture, community, and aloha through lei, food, music, hula, and togetherness. Over the years, we’ve created our own NYC version of that celebration right here in Queens bringing people together through culture, creativity, and community.

This event would not be possible without our amazing collaborators:
🌴 for opening the streets and creating space for community
🌴 for continuing to uplift and represent creative AAPI & Hawaiian culture in NYC

And a very special mahalo to our first sponsors:
🤙
🌺

Thank you for helping make Year 4 extra special.

Come celebrate with us good food, local vendors, music, aloha, and community all day long 🌺
