Took my wife out for what I thought would be a simple steak dinner—just a ribeye, a side salad, and sparkling water. Nothing fancy.

Subtotal came to $149, but then the restaurant added a 22% hospitality charge ($32.78) plus tax, bringing the total to $198.

I quietly asked the server if that charge counted as a tip. She said, “Additional gratuity is optional if you’d like to recognize the service.”

Recognize the service?? I honestly thought the 22% had already done that for me. I don’t want to penalize a server for the restaurant’s policy, but it left me unsure—should I tip more, or is the hospitality charge enough?

I ended up just writing a question mark on the tip line because I genuinely didn’t know what was expected.

Has anyone else run into this? Do you leave an additional tip, or just roll with the automatic service charge? 🤔🥩

3 Quarter Pounders with Cheese

It’s crazy how fast-food prices have shifted. What used to be an inexpensive, quick meal now feels more like a substantial mini-feast bill.

A trip to the drive-thru that would have been $20–30 a decade ago can now easily hit over $200 for a larger order. And somehow, everyone seems fine with it—just swipe and go, then realize later how much you spent.

A quick McDonald's run turned into a $118.37 bill.

The order was:

2 Big Macs
2 Quarter Pounders with Cheese
10-piece McNuggets
4 Cheeseburgers
4 McChickens
4 Medium Fries
4 Medium Drinks
1 Large Fry
1 Large Drink

Total: $118.37

Don't get me wrong—it's a decent amount of food. But growing up, spending over $100 at McDonald's sounded almost impossible unless you were feeding an entire sports team.

Now a few burgers, sandwiches, fries, drinks, and nuggets can push you into triple digits before you even leave the parking lot.

What really gets me is how fast-food used to be the budget option. If you wanted something quick and inexpensive, you hit the drive-thru. These days, it feels like you need to check your bank account before ordering for a group.

The craziest part is that nobody even seems shocked anymore. You tap your card, grab the bags, and then later realize you just spent $118.37 at McDonald's.

This wasn't a restaurant. It wasn't a steakhouse. It wasn't even a sit-down meal.

It was McDonald's.

The order included:

2 Big Macs
2 Quarter Pounders
20-piece McNuggets
3 Large Fries
3 Large Drinks
4 Cheeseburgers
4 McChickens

The subtotal came to $85.81.

After tax, the total was $102.84.

Seeing a triple-digit total at a drive-thru honestly stopped me in my tracks.

I remember when fast food was the affordable option. It was the place you went when you wanted something quick, easy, and inexpensive.

Now it feels like every order requires a quick mental budget meeting before you pull up to the speaker.

What's wild is how normal it's become. You tap your card, grab the bags, drive away, and then a few minutes later realize you just spent over $100 at McDonald's.

I'm not saying the order was tiny—there was definitely a lot of food here—but it's still hard to wrap my head around the fact that a fast-food run can now cost as much as a decent sit-down meal used to.
