Happy 100th Birthday to Dorothy Juanita Drake-Dye-Denton!

On Sept. 27, 1926, Dorothy Drake was born to Herman & Maude (Eller) Drake. She was raised in the Union and Towns county area along with her brothers W.T. Drake and Bobby Drake, and sister Eva Mae Drake Pennington.

I’ve been on a bit of a death-and-dying documentary kick lately.
i watched Take Me Out Feet First (twice now), and I just finished Life After on PBS.
And now I’m looking for my next watch.

Happy International Coffee Day! ☕️

Some people run on sunshine. 🌞
Some run on positive affirmations. 🥰
Some of us run on caffeine and a questionable number of tabs open in our brains. 😂

Coffee is a hug in a mug, a reason to pause, and occasionally the only thing standing between us and committing minor acts of chaos.

So tell me…

My grandmother died from breast cancer. My mom died after breast cancer. 🎀

I walked beside my mom through that journey, and it changed me in ways I'm still discovering. 🌿🍂

I'm aware of it every time I work with families and have to recognize when my own experience is trying to enter the room. I've been the daughter who wasn't ready to see what was happening. I know what denial can look like from the inside.

I'm aware of it in the way I see the person who is dying. Their fear matters. Their anger matters. Their wishes matter. Their experience matters.

I'm aware of it every year when it's time for my mammogram. I don't skip it.

And I'm aware that all of us die. You'd think doing the work I do would make me completely comfortable with that.

It doesn't. Sometimes I still get anxious about my own death.

These pictures are pieces of my mom's journey, and mine beside her. From the first port surgery to trying on wigs to appointments to our last picture together to holding her hand as she labored out of life.

I am aware. Because I was there. 🩷
