Meet Jia Hui, part of the Publicity Committee!

1. Why did you join KidsREAD Club? 💭
I joined KidsREAD club as I have a strong passion in taking care of children! I believe that when they are young, it is very important to guide them to cultivate good habits.

2. What is your biggest takeaway? 👀

My biggest takeaway would be working with a team of like-minded friends! It was memorable to plan sessions together and even volunteer together for some of the sessions.

3. What advice do you have for potential volunteers? 💡

Don't be afraid to volunteer at KidsREAD :-) The experienced volunteers and organising committee members will guide you through the process!

Meet Asher, part of the Teaching Committee!

1. Why did you join KidsREAD Club? 💭
In the closing months of 2019, the idea of having a KidsREAD club in Boon Lay that allowed constant interaction with the same pool of kids was intriguing! Hence, I decided to commit myself to this club and programme to boost children literacy rates and more importantly, influence them to enjoy reading!

2. What is your biggest takeaway? 👀

Understanding the dynamics of my team members, as well as getting to know more about the Boon Lay community is definitely an eye opening for me as I get a chance to work with people from all walks of life, and to empathise and critically think of new, creative ways of doing things!

3. What advice do you have for potential volunteers? 💡

Always remember to have fun in anything you do! Make new friends and enjoy the process :D

Meet Cheryl, part of the Admin Committee!

1. Why did you join KidsREAD Club? 💭

Having a passion for planning activities, KidsREAD Club was an avenue for me to create exciting and enriching programmes for children. I was also interested in joining the KidsREAD club to better understand the Boon Lay Community.

2. What is your biggest takeaway? 👀

Being an introvert, I often avoid interaction, especially with children as I am awkward with them. However, KidsREAD gave me the opportunity to have first hand interaction with children and that made me realize and appreciate the childlike innocence that these kids view the world with. I enjoy working with them and always bring around the positivity and open mindset they have taught me.

3. What advice do you have for potential volunteers? 💡

Every child is special and it's essential to understand their preferences and habits, so do spend time understanding and interacting with each child!

Meet Ariel, part of the Teaching Committee!

1. Why did you join KidsREAD Club? 💭

It sounded like a good volunteering opportunity, and I felt I could contribute valuable insights.

2. What is your biggest takeaway? 👀

I think after volunteering for more than a year, my biggest takeaway is that the effort we put in really does translate into results, especially since we are working with children. The concrete results of our efforts may not always be very evident, but it is very clear that everything we have told the children and done with them, sticks with them.

3. What advice do you have for potential volunteers? 💡

I hope potential volunteers can understand that volunteering would not be easy all the time, nor would it be instantly gratifying in any way, but it will definitely be a very meaningful use of your time!!

During our second online session of June, our children learnt about their extended family👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 and ways to show their appreciation to their close ones such as folding cute origami flowers💐 and hearts 💕for their close ones. Through various activities, the children also got to extend their learning beyond members that form their own family unit to that of animals too 🐼🐹🐰 Have you shown a family member some love recently? ❤️

Fun fact: Baby elephants are called Calves🐘

Meet Xin Tong, part of the Teaching Committee!

1. Why did you join KidsREAD Club? 💭
My friends and I have always wanted to be part of a VIA program where we could help and interact with children. When we first heard of the club, we decided to give it a shot as it was something that we had a shared passion for.

2. What is your biggest takeaway? 👀

Our actions can have a significant impact on the lives of the children. It is heartening to see the progress that the children have made throughout the few months. Seeing them enjoy the lessons motivates me to continue putting in my best to improve their learning experience.

3. What advice do you have for potential volunteers? 💡

Initially, it may seem intimidating to sign up for a program that you haven't had experience in. However, there is no need to worry because that was the case for most of us here! KidsREAD provides volunteers a chance to learn while volunteering in a friendly environment, and there would always be people there to guide you along. Take this as an opportunity to learn about what you are interested in and don’t let your concerns stop you from helping others!

Meet Yee Wei, part of the Volunteer Committee!

1. Why did you join KidsREAD Club? 💭

I really enjoy interacting with kids so the club was a wonderful opportunity which allowed me to do so. Furthermore, during my younger days, I used to visit the library every Saturday afternoon just to sit in and listen to the storytelling sessions by the librarians onsite. as i remain in awe at how stories could come to live thru the mouths of a storyteller, attending sessions at KidsREAD has allowed me to hopefully create the same experience for others :))

2. What is your biggest takeaway? 👀

The bonds and relationships I have formed with the beneficiaries as well as our dear volunteers. I feel heartened when I think of the fact that children whom I have interacted with before remember me and remain to engage me enthusiastically each time they see me.

3. What advice do you have for potential volunteers? 💡

Keep an open mind when interacting with others and you will find yourself discovering a whole new experience like never before!

1. Why did you join KidsREAD Club? 💭

I love interacting with children and recognize the importance of their development at a young age. I hope to touch lives and bring happiness to their lives so that they can remember these meaningful activities during their childhood :)

2. What is your biggest takeaway? 👀

My biggest takeaway is to serve with your heart. There are countless challenges that may arise when planning activities/volunteering as a facilitator but if you have the right mindset and priorities for the children’s learning, everything else will fall into place eventually :)

3. What advice do you have for the potential volunteers? 💡

Don’t be afraid to make mistakes and most importantly have fun!!
