How to recognize the sexes of your birds

So many Poultry farmers or starters wonder how to recognize birds ..Here are few tips to know

1. Hold the head of any bird vertically...The female tends to curl inwardly while the Males are straight

2. Hold the 2 legs by turning the head downwards,whichever curls inwardly is a female bird while the male stretches..

HOW TO IDENTIFY HEAT STRESSED BIRDS

Heat stressed birds will show most of these signs:
1. Panting & Rapid Breathing with open mouth

2. Wings stretched from their body with erect feathers

3. Lying down with their neck stretched out on the floor

4. Pale Comb & Wattles

5. Watery p**p

6. Increase in water consumption

7. Decrease in feed consumption

8. Reduced movement and activity

9. Decrease in egg production

You can help your Broilers survive the heat period by doing the following:

1. Keep all curtains and coverings around the pen fully open

2. Top up their water to ensure their drinkers are full for most of the afternoon.

3. For especially hot days, add ice cubes to the water to make it cooler.

4. Add vitamins in their water daily as this acts as a stress reliever

5. Remove feeders that obstruct the birds access to water around 2pm. For pens with over stocking (More birds than the standard requirement in the pen), remove all feeders from the pen from 2pm till 5pm

6. Ensure the litter on the floor is dry and fresh. Wet litter increases the floor temperature and adds to the heat in the room.

It is also important that you are at the pen between 5pm to 7pm to assess the state of things and to assist those birds that may have been severely affected by the heat.

I usually keep a bucket of cool water to dip highly stressed birds before keeping them in a more ventilated place for recovery.

The warmness presently is terrible in farm. Several farmers will loose heavy Broilers above four weeks of age within the next few days.

The threat hours are typically among 5pm to 7pm. This is the time at some point of which maximum of the warmth confused broilers.

UNDERSTANDING THE DIFFERENCES IN BROILERS TRAITS AND STRAINS*

There have been confusion in the modern broilers market as to which is the best of broilers ; COBB, ROSS or ARBOR ACRE (AA)

Before any analysis, i want us to understand the great-grand-parents (Pedigree) of broilers.
Crosses of CORNISH GIANT(male) PLYMOUTH ROCK(female)
In most cases, both are white to continue the lineage of white feather trait. The Cornish males are known to be broad breasted and tall, while the Rock females are known to be fast growers with evenly deposited muscle mass.
The cross of both gave a superb result

Is the improved strain but not yet in Nigeria.
ROSS 808
Is still under research

*ARBOR ACRE (AA)*
Grows fast, evenly distributed muscle mass, less fat, FCR 1.6 - 1.9 in 6wks, ME range from 2900 KCal and above is able to give efficient result, better warm climate performance in comparison, highest immunity/survivability according to research in comparison. ARBOR ACRE plus (AA+)
Is the currently improved strain, scarce in Nigeria.

*CONCLUSION*
In the real sense from the information above, it now depends on individual farmer preference to choose which best fits for his/her farm management either in growth rate, tallness, FCR, ME, or survivability.
In general, all the broiler strains give equivalent weight at 6wks with Ross on increased margin but poorer FCR and survivability in modern broilers comparison.

Good morning farmers,A typical signs of respiratory illness in chickens include sneezing, wheezing, coughing, and runny nose and eyes. The miserable chicken also suffers fatigue and loss of appetite.
1.Whenever,you discover such,try isolating the bird(s)..
2. Treat others with preventive drugs.We use any drug having furazolidone as active ingredient.oral medications are also available for 3 to 5days period.
3. Add vitamins after treating them for a period of 5days and give clean water for 2 days afterwards
4. Clear and clean the chicken cages or nests as fast as possible..
