SHE ACTUALLY ADDED THE COST OF WATER… AND I COULDN’T STOP SMILING
One thing I do with my beginner students is this:
After every practical, we don’t just stop at baking.
We calculate.
We cost.
We break everything down.
Recently, I was explaining costing to one of my students and told her:
“Even the water you use for production should be accounted for.”
She immediately looked at me and said:
“Water too?”
I laughed and explained that if you’re buying water or paying for a water supply, then it’s part of your production cost.
As business owners, it’s the little things we ignore that often eat into our profit.
Fast forward to one of our recent practicals.
I asked her to do the costing herself.
When I went through her work, guess what I saw?
She had added the cost of water…
At that moment, I knew she was beginning to understand what running a baking business is really about.
When I started learning baking years ago, we were taught how to bake, but many of these business principles were not explained in detail.
We learned some things through experience, mistakes, and countless lessons along the way.
That’s why I made myself a promise:
Every student that passes through Ambassadors Cake Academy will learn baking the right way.
Not just how to mix flour and butter.
But how to:
✔ Cost products correctly
✔ Price confidently
✔ Understand profit
✔ Avoid unnecessary losses
✔ Build a sustainable baking business
Because knowing how to bake is one thing.
Knowing how to make money from baking is another thing entirely.
And seeing my student gradually connect the dots has made me so proud.
