It is easy to forget how small Kuala Lumpur once was. The city grew from a tin-mining settlement, shaped by communities who came here to work, trade and build a life.

Today, Gioia Chinatown sits right in the middle of a city that grew far beyond those early beginnings.

Yap Ah Loy is often spoken about as though he built Kuala Lumpur by himself. The story is more complicated than that. He was the third Kapitan Cina and became one of the most influential figures in early Kuala Lumpur, helping the town recover after the Selangor Civil War and continuing its development as a centre for mining and trade.

In January 1881, fire tore through Kuala Lumpur, and in December a major flood swept through the town. The damage was devastating — but it also forced Kuala Lumpur to rethink how it was built. Some of the architecture we associate with old KL today began with the need to rebuild after disaster.

The rebuilding wasn’t simply about replacing what had been destroyed. The town was being reorganised too. Roads were widened and improved, drainage was addressed, and new buildings were increasingly constructed from brick and tile. What we now think of as the character of old KL was, in many ways, shaped during this period of rebuilding.

This is where Brickfields becomes part of the story. The brickmaking industry expanded around the city, with Brickfields becoming particularly associated with the trade. By 1886, the area had a concentration of brick kilns that helped give it the name we still use today. We can’t say that the bricks in Gioia’s building specifically came from Brickfields — there isn’t evidence for that — but we can say that Brickfields was part of the larger story of how central Kuala Lumpur, including High Street, was rebuilt in brick. And that connection is pretty special.

Before it became Jalan Tun H.S. Lee, this street was known as High Street. This stretch is one of the early streets where shophouses were rebuilt in brick and tile, with many dating from the mid-1880s. We’re on one of the streets that helped shape the rebuilt city.

One of the things we love about this part of Kuala Lumpur is how much history is packed into such a small area.

And then there is Gioia. It is still being used, still being walked through, still filled with people and conversation. Today, someone might come through the doors for a scoop of gelato or a coffee instead of whatever brought people here generations ago.

The building has simply found another chapter.
And perhaps that's a better way to keep history alive — by allowing it to keep living.

From upstairs, you start to see the relationship between the old Kuala Lumpur and the new one.
The streets below have changed many times. New buildings have appeared, businesses have come and gone, and the city has continued to grow around these old shophouses.
But the older layers haven't disappeared completely. They are still here, sitting alongside everything new.

From up here, you can see a little of what Kuala Lumpur has become. But look closely and you'll also see what came before it. A town shaped by tin and trade. A city rebuilt after fire and flood. Streets rebuilt in brick and tile. Communities that established homes, businesses, temples, schools and markets. And generations of people who continued to add something of their own. That is what we love about Kuala Lumpur.

As Merdeka approaches, perhaps that is worth remembering — that a city is not only built by the things we put up. It is built by the people, places and stories we choose to carry forward.

There’s a certain happiness in a slow morning. 🌅

A good coffee, a warm buttery croissant, a little sunlight coming through the window, and nowhere you need to be just yet.

The Italians call it “il dolce far niente” — the sweetness of doing nothing.

We call it a pretty good reason to spend your morning at GIOIA.

Come by, settle in, and enjoy the morning.

Freshness doesn't happen by chance.

It begins with the magnificent “Holstein Friesian”, the world's most renowned dairy cow, celebrated for producing exceptionally fresh, high-quality milk.

At GIOIA, we believe every extraordinary gelato deserves an extraordinary beginning. That's why we're investing in our own “Farm to Scoop” journey, ensuring freshness starts at the source.

Because the finest gelato isn't just made. It's raised, nurtured, and crafted with purpose.🐄🤍🍨

"What makes your Matcha Latte different?"

We get asked this a lot—and it’s a fair question.

While there’s no shortage of matcha lattes around, we can tell you why this specific blend is on our menu.

Stone-milled by a Japanese Master Roaster, our ceremonial-grade matcha retains what makes true matcha special: a fresh, vibrant, and naturally balanced umami profile.

It’s a cup crafted to let the tea speak for itself. Every other ingredient is simply there to elevate the flavour, never to hide it.
