Back in 2018, Flip Burger was just a dream buried beneath renovation dust, sleepless nights, and late-hour mall fit-outs at Gurney Paragon Mall. Mall renovations could only happen overnight.
In 2019, we joined GrabFood during its Penang rollout. The beginning was choppy and buggy โ everyone was figuring things out together. But honestly, it was also exciting to be part of something so new.
What truly stood out to us was how much Grab believed in growing local brands together. There were generous campaigns and offers that introduced delivery culture to the masses, helping small restaurants like ours reach customers we never imagined possible.
Then COVID hit hard in 2020.
Like many F&B businesses, we almost died as malls became empty overnight, foot traffic disappeared. During our time in F&B ICU, GrabFood became our biggest sales aggregator and a major lifeline for Flip Burger.
But beyond sales, the support went much deeper.
Grab stepped up with real-life signages, promotional campaigns, influencer videos, and constant efforts to help local businesses stay visible when the world felt completely shut down. And when things slowly recovered and the roads became busy again, seeing Flip Burger featured on THREE billboards across Penang honestly felt surreal for a small burger shop like ours. Tak tau berapa ratus ribu-ribu costs involved ๐
But somehow, there was still a level above surreal.
It was the day Grab CEO Anthony Tan himself visited our little Flip Burger outlet. And in true Flip Burger fashion, I somehow managed to convince him to autograph our burger packaging โ the one that featured a GrabFood order being delivered by a drone.
Until today, it still never gets old spotting GrabCar partners driving around Penang with Flip Burger liveries on their cars. From renovation dust in 2018 to seeing our brand moving around the streets of Penang โ itโs been one crazy journey.
