13 beaches in Sri Lanka named among the world's best destinations.

Thirteen beaches in Sri Lanka have been named by the renowned travel guide Lonely Planet as the world’s best beach destinations. The recognition confirms Sri Lanka as a world-class tropical tourist destination and will be a major boost to the country’s tourism industry.

Lonely Planet notes that while Sri Lanka is a year-round destination, it is important for tourists to take into account the two monsoon wind patterns. The southern and southwestern coasts (Hikkaduwa, Galle, Mirissa) are best from November to April, while the eastern coast (Arugam Bay, Passikudah, Trincomalee) is best from May to September.

The 13 beaches that have been rated are:

01. Unawatuna – A popular beach with safe
swimming for the whole family.

02. Mirissa – A place for whale watching and
sunsets.

03. Bentota – A beach famous for water sports and
relaxation.
