When we last closed the hotel in 2023, it was for one of the biggest changes in Peponi’s recent history: the renovation and expansion of our Jahazi bar and dining area.
Change often brings mixed reactions, especially in a place that means so much to so many people. But Peponi has never stood still. What began in 1967 as a simple four-bedroom guesthouse has gradually grown into the 29-room boutique hotel it is today, evolving alongside Shela village and the community around it.
As Lamu has grown, so too has the number of guests who choose to dine, meet, and gather at Peponi. The renovation allowed us to create more space while preserving the atmosphere, views, and sense of place that have always defined the hotel.
This year, we have closed once again for further improvements, but the Jahazi bar and restaurant area completed in 2023 remains open throughout the renovations. So whether you’re visiting Lamu for the first time or returning after many years, you can still enjoy a little piece of the Peponi experience.
Sometimes change is necessary to ensure that the places we love can continue to be enjoyed for generations to come.
