August moments🤍

One month in Ankara, Turkey (where my husband was reassigned).

It’s hard to believe we arrived August 1st because this month feels like it’s been both 5 minutes and 5 years😂

There have been a lot of hard moments, but also so many glimmers of joy woven in.

We’ve spent the month living in a hotel, which honestly has had its perks. No cooking, no cleaning 😂. We’ve explored an Ankara, walked A LOT and used Google Translate pretty much for every conversation.

We also had both kids with us before college, which I’m incredibly grateful for. Then 10 days in Japan getting our daughter settled into college.

And tomorrow…we move into our apartment. (Fun fact, I’ve moved 17 times since March 🥴)

Our household goods that were packed up in Bahrain are still sitting there😵‍💫 So we’re buying the bare minimum, borrowing furniture and figuring out how to live until the rest eventually catches up with us.

My workouts have been somewhat inconsistent. My steps have stayed high, but I’m ready for strength training to become part of my routine again. It’s really what changes the shape of my body and makes me feel strong and capable (and less achy!)

And I’m ready to have a kitchen and start making my own healthy meals- as nice as it has been, restaurant food just has so much more sodium, oils, etc.

Through all the uncertainty, one thing that has continued to ground me is my work.

I’ve been programming workouts, virtually training clients, creating meal plans and coaching women through fat loss from hotel rooms, Japan, wherever I happen to be that week😂 And I’m so grateful for it.

I love what I do. I love my clients. And in a season where so much of my normal life has been stripped away, having work that gives me joy and purpose has meant more than ever.

August wasn’t easy.

But it had family. New experiences. A lot of laughing. Some tears. New beginnings. Really good food. And plenty of reminders that there is still so much good happening right alongside the hard.

Going into September trusting God with this new season and trying to make this new place feel like home🤍

I remember being barely a teenager and picking apart a photo of myself in a bathing suit because of how my thighs looked.

In my 20s, it got worse.

I said no to things because I didn’t want to wear shorts, because I “felt fat,” or because I thought I didn’t look socially acceptable. The fear of not measuring up actually stopped me from living parts of my life.

Then came pregnancy and childbirth in my 30s, and a whole new body to pick apart 😞

But around that time, I also started learning about my body instead of just judging it.

I went from being a cardio queen to taking strength training seriously, starting with weights in my tiny living room and DVDs 💪🏻

I went back to school to study nutrition, became a personal trainer, and started working with women of all ages.

Through years of learning, coaching and plenty of trial and error with my own body, I started seeing it differently.

✨The more I understood my body, the less I saw it as something that constantly needed fixing.

I started treating it like something special. I fed it better. I made it stronger. I paid attention to what made it feel good. And slowly, I became a lot more accepting of all of its imperfections.

I’m 50 now.

Do I love every photo of myself? Nope. Do I never wish something looked different? Yup.

I just don’t give those thoughts the authority I once did. I wear the shorts. I put on the bathing suit.

💕And honestly, this is a huge part of WHY I do what I do now.

I want women to understand their bodies - how to feed them, strengthen them, take care of them, instead of spending years fighting against them.

💪🏻Because knowledge is empowering.

When you understand what your body needs, you can make choices from a place of confidence instead of constantly wondering if you should eat less, exercise more, cut out another food, or try the next diet.

That’s really what we do inside Eat to Lose. Yes, we work on fat loss.

But more importantly, I want you to come out of those 8 weeks knowing how to take care of your body long after we’re done 💜

Message me to get on the interest list, we start September 20th.

One of the hardest things I did for my body in my late 40s was eat MORE.

But I need to explain what I mean by that, because I’m definitely not saying every woman over 40 needs to go add 500 calories to her day.

I had to learn to eat more of the things my body actually needed: enough protein, actual meals (not glorified snacks), fruits and vegetables, carbs to support my training -

instead of trying to keep meals as small as possible and then wondering why I was hungry, craving things, or picking at food later.

And I see this with women all the time.

They’ll tell me, “I really don’t eat that much.” And they may not!

Their breakfast might be coffee with toast and an egg, lunch is something light like a green salad and few pieces of chicken, and they’re trying to be “good” all day.

But then there are handfuls of this, bites of that, a few drinks, something sweet, or they’re ravenous by dinner.

The calories can still add up, they’re just not coming from the foods that are going to keep them full, help them hold onto muscle and support how they want to feel.

That was the mindset shift for me. I stopped trying to make every meal as low calorie as possible and started making my meals more substantial and intentional.

And yes, when fat loss is my goal, I still need a calorie deficit. That hasn’t changed.

But there’s a big difference between eating less food and eating fewer calories while still giving your body plenty of nutrition.

Fat loss still requires a calorie deficit. But that doesn’t mean your meals need to be tiny. Eat MORE of the foods that fill you up and support your body, so it’s easier to eat LESS of the things that don’t.
