DANCING INTO RETREAT WEEK inspired by Ancient Greek dancers🏺Amorgos Greek Grace retreat with lulu soni begins Thursday and we’re shifting into retreat mode - will be less online and much slower to respond to DMs! Can’t wait to be with our crew for another sold out gathering over the summer solstice 🌞

Image 1: Terra cotta dancing woman, 3rd century BCE. Greek, found in Southern Italy. Possibly a maenad, the dancers who swirled into a frenzy embracing Dionysus.
Image 2: Dancer holding what appears to be a krotala, used to keep the rhythm. Likely 4th-2nd century BCE.
From Athens or Myrena, now in Berlin.

These days my practice looks more like box breath while rocking my toddler to sleep than deep, dedicated practices in studios… but we’ll take what we can get! Slide through for more examples and an honest reflection.

🧿And I would like to make it abundantly clear that I do not think moms need to be martyrs. But sometimes it’s just harder to get places, and I explain why this is simply what has unfolded for me. I know it will change as she changes and our lives continue to evolve. I have missed studios and my movement communities in New York so badly!

And major shoutout/credit to all the parents (moms, dads, all of ya!) trying to take care of ourselves so we can stay regulated and model health for our kids. It’s definitely more of an our generation thing, and we’re all learning as we go. I’m endlessly humbled by this journey and all the parents who try their best. I have no idea how my mom did it and I am so grateful for all that I know she sacrificed for me.

Ancient wisdom that’s timeless courtesy of the genius Pythagoras. And one could certainly say he knew a thing or two about harmony.🏺Our modern application: There is a metaphysics to minding your own business (thank you for that phrase). Minding your own business is powerful. Once you’ve put something out into the world, why not log off?

Searching for inspiration is one thing, but paying too much attention to what others are doing (and endlessly scrolling) is draining! Not to mention creatively stifling.

If you want to engage, go for it. But if you want to truly rest, practice putting your work behind you. Otherwise, your mind will never be at ease.

ANCIENT GREEK WOMEN. 🏺🌿 Minoan frescoes from the “House of Ladies” at Akrotiri on modern day Santorini. These graceful depictions suggest a reverence for nature and beauty. Perhaps something to channel on a next walk this weekend?

RESPECTFULLY, YOUR FAVORITE ANCIENT GREEK PHILOSOPHER DIDN’T SAY THAT. 🤭

🏺Here’s a look at a few popular quotes that are misattributed to the most famous ancient Greek philosophers. I’ve been thinking about this one for years if I’m being honest, as well as the distortion and watering down of philosophy to make it palatable for Instagram/LinkedIn/SEO.

🧿THIS IS JUST FOR FUN! We’re not philosophy professors and/or professional translators of Ancient Greek. But it is fascinating to dive into how the internet and the popularization of pop psychology influence our thinking about… well, thinking.

Did we ruin any of these for you? 🤭😂

SOLAR ENERGY 🌞 HYDRA on film. With the summer solstice is creeping up it feels like we are charging and ready to actually embody this whole “slow living” thing. Anyone else?

KALO MINA, Y’ALL. 🧿🌊 and just like that, we’re welcoming June in the big blue of the Aegean and Amorgos. Very cute to experience the wonder of sea travel through her eyes, there was notable excitement over the sea “vroom vrooms.” We really got our steps and toddler dead lifts in on that 🤭

Tired but GRATEFUL and officially excited for our sold out summer solstice retreat. After a long, rainy spring, I’m finally getting my sea legs (literally and metaphorically) and feeling ready to transition to the expansiveness of summer 🌞

And a big cheers to everyone working the season this summer. We know it’s a lot. Wishing you all the best. 🫶🏼

So many people yearn to connect with their ancestral lands. It’s one reason we see the deep diaspora longing and love of Greece, to an extent that defies logic. You’re invited to join us this October for a retreat to help you connect on another level with your roots. And no, you don’t have to be Greek for this one. It’s for any woman who feels a tug to be with this land, to learn ancestral ways, and to connect with other women seeking to do the same. 🏺 Join us - just 5 spots left!

VINTAGE YIA MAS CIRCA 2018-19🏺 να ‘μαστε καλά 🏺 a look back. Throwing it back to our early days… photo shoots in Elizabeth Street Garden, Yia Mas workshops at soho, some of the earliest things I drew when dreaming up the branding.
Because sometimes it’s important to look back at A: Just how long we’ve at this and B: our origins. at the very first yia mas I talked about how this project was inspired by my Great Grandmother - and a couple weeks ago a post with her image went viral. Instagram was a very different place when we started, and other than the Mediterranean diet and mastiha conversations, no one was really addressing so much of what we talk about now.

🧿 AND YET. Our why hasn’t changed: sharing tools and philosophies for wellbeing inspired by Greece’s land, traditions, and ancient wisdom, and a desire to create an alternative creative project to the “blue and white” of most diaspora brands.

Since then… Yia Mas evolved and grew through a pandemic, global moves, MANY workshops from Chicago to online courses with 40 participants, retreats from Epirus to Amorgos, and our making own child. There were opportunities to “expand” that didn’t feel right, and we’ve chosen to stay in our lane and niche.

It’s fun to look back! Thanks for being here.

ANASTENARIA: a fire-walking ritual where faith and mystery trump fear. 🌞 Xronia polla, as well, to all the Constantines and Helens - probably at least half of you.

We are fascinated by this beautiful, mystical custom. Note that we absolutely, positively couldn’t do justice to the entire ritual in instagram slides, but this is a good *introduction.* Beyond firewalking, this ethimo includes song and dance, sacred objects, icons, and shared human experiences.

💡For more in depth storytelling and gorgeous analogue photographs, visit our blog to read our interview with who has captured this behind the scenes over three years.
