Next Saturday will be the final parkrun here, and I wanted to say something because, for us, this is about so much more than the end of a Saturday morning run.
Our Saturday mornings with parkrun actually started before Daisies even existed as you know it today. We started with a gazebo in the yard, serving bacon rolls, coffee and cake to runners after parkrun.
It really was a family affair from the beginning. My husband would be there helping me cook bacon rolls, the kids would muck in and help us, and together we’d spend our Saturday mornings serving the parkrun community from our little gazebo.
Those mornings became part of the beginning of Daisies.
Then came our little cafe, and Saturday mornings grew into one of my favourite parts of the week. Watching people arrive for parkrun, seeing familiar faces week after week, hearing the chatter afterwards over coffee and cake, muddy trainers, families, volunteers and friendships being made… it has created a real little community here. 💛
And sadly, the loss of parkrun will have a very real impact on my small business too.
Saturday mornings have become an incredibly important part of our week at Daisies. The support we receive from the parkrun community makes a significant difference to a tiny independent business like mine, and losing that regular Saturday morning trade is something that genuinely worries me.
I don’t say that for sympathy, and I certainly don’t expect anyone to feel responsible for keeping my business afloat. I say it because I think it’s important to show the wider impact that community events can have.
A parkrun might look like people turning up, running 5k and going home.
But it isn’t.
It’s routine. It’s friendship. It’s exercise and fresh air. It’s volunteers giving their time. It’s people getting out of the house. It’s a coffee afterwards with someone you might otherwise never have met. And it’s support flowing into small local businesses without people perhaps even realising the difference they’re making.
I’ve watched that community grow around us, and Daisies has been incredibly lucky to be a tiny part of it from those very first mornings under a gazebo.
So next Saturday is going to feel very bittersweet.
To every runner, walker, volunteer, spectator, child and muddy pair of trainers that has wandered over to Daisies afterwards…
Thank you. ❤️
You haven’t just bought bacon rolls, coffees and slices of cake.
You’ve helped a gazebo in a yard become Daisies. 🌼
And you’ve helped keep a little independent business alive.
I genuinely hope this isn’t the end of that wonderful Saturday morning community, just the end of this particular chapter.
Daisy & Jon 🌼
