Sophie Eats | Paris

La Mère Catherine, Place du Tertre, Montmartre

When in Paris, I’m always on the hunt for proper French bistro cooking. Not fancy for fancy’s sake, just traditional dishes, classic recipes and food that celebrates its roots.

So, on our visit to Montmartre, La Mère Catherine was firmly on the list.

Dating back to 1793, this historic restaurant has been part of Montmartre’s story for centuries, serving up the kind of traditional French cuisine we came here for.

We chose seafood and French classics, starting with stuffed eggs and fresh pink shrimp, followed by beef tartare and blanquette de veau — a beautiful, traditional veal stew. Proper bistro favourites, and exactly the sort of dishes I want to eat when I’m in France.

The food was the reason we came, but the setting was a fabulous bonus. Sitting outside under cover on Place du Tertre, surrounded by cobbled streets, bougie little shops and street artists, with the buzz of Paris all around us? Très bien!

For me, this is what eating in Paris is all about: seeking out the classics, understanding a little of the food culture and enjoying dishes that have stood the test of time.

My verdict?
If you’re heading to Montmartre and love traditional French food, put La Mère Catherine on your list.

I’d happily return. And that’s always the real test, isn’t it?

POV: you come to Paris and go again for the Tarte Tatin of your dreams… THIRD time!

Maison Dupuy, 13 Rue Cadet, Paris

This was our 3rd visit to Maison Dupuy — and that probably tells you everything you need to know!

Tucked away in the brilliant Rue Cadet food neighbourhood in the 9th arrondissement, this little spot has become a bit of a Sophie Eats Paris favourite.

We popped in for breakfast ordering a café au lait and then came the reason we keep coming back…

That Tarte Tatin.

Deeply caramelised, glossy, buttery, sticky, with beautifully soft apples and gorgeous pastry underneath.

Honestly… one of the best Tarte Tatins I’ve eaten anywhere.

And the Quiche Lorraine? Packed full of local ham, rich, savoury and properly French. Absolutely no skimping on the filling!

Maison Dupuy also does high-quality breads, cakes and viennoiseries, so if you’re wandering around the 9th and want somewhere that feels properly Parisian put this one on your list.

Our third visit and still not disappointed.

Must. Must. Visit.

POV: You’ve just stepped off the Eurostar, you’re a little hungry and you want your first taste of Paris to start immediately…

Look no further than Terminus Nord — literally across the road from Gare du Nord.

A proper Parisian brasserie that’s been part of the Gare du Nord scene for generations, with that classic bustling, old-school French atmosphere that makes you feel like you’ve arrived in Paris before you’ve even left the station.

So naturally… we stopped for lunch. 🇫🇷

Nothing too heavy — just a little indulgence to ease ourselves into Paris:

Langoustine ravioli
Prawn cocktail
Oeufs
Chardonnay
And a refreshing b**r, because… well, we were in Paris.

The perfect first stop when you’ve arrived hungry, want a proper Parisian experience and don’t fancy trekking across the city before your first glass of w**e.

September… you’ve been a bit of a blur.

From beautifully put-together buffets and anniversary dinners, to pop-up restaurants, food demos and a whole lot of cooking in between…

We’ve been here, there and everywhere.

Private dining & anniversary celebrations
Corporate & party buffets
Rugby Distillery pop-up
Pop-up restaurant nights
Food demos at Leamington Food Festival
Blondes n Bourbon out and about
Grazing, canapés & plenty of bespoke menus
And a few events I’m probably still recovering from!

Different venues. Different menus. Different crowds.

But that’s exactly what I love about what I do — no two weeks are ever the same.

So, September, thank you. You’ve been a busy one… and I’m already wondering what October is going to throw at me!
