I’ve been absolutely overwhelmed by the messages of support over the last 24 hours. Thank you so much to everyone who has reached out, commented, shared posts and backed us.

If I’m honest, this whole situation has only made the restaurant even more popular before we’ve even opened. Literally thousands of people have engaged with the story online. Silver linings, I guess.

Yesterday opened my eyes a little. Hearing accusations thrown around in court about threatening disabled people and other nonsense was pretty shocking to be honest. To stoop that low says far more about them than it does about me.

What mattered in the end was the truth.

I stood there without expensive legal representation because I simply couldn’t justify spending another £6,000 after everything I’ve already invested into this project. I was told I was up against one of the best licensing solicitors around I would hate to know how much money they wasted yesterday .

One of the journalists from the Chronicle was sitting at the back during the hearing. Afterwards he said to me:
“Mind, you didn’t leave that solicitor with much change, did you?”

That made me laugh.

The reality is, I tried to compromise before the hearing . I offered conditions lower than what was eventually granted, but it still wasn’t enough for them. They wanted a restaurant closed at 9pm, no music, and no alcohol unless served with meals.

Closing a restaurant right in the middle of evening dining service was never going to be workable.

What’s ironic is that these people could have had an amazing restaurant a stone’s throw from their homes. One resident claimed he moved to Prospect Place for “peace and quiet” — despite buying a house attached to one of the busiest pubs in Newbiggin, licensed until 1am, packed for football matches every week, with live bands on weekends. You couldn’t write it.

In the end, they really have cut their noses off to spite their faces. Instead of working with us and enjoying what will be a fantastic addition to the town, they chose bitterness and obstruction.

But anyway — onwards and upwards.

This place is going to be amazing. We’ve got so much planned going forward and I genuinely can’t wait to welcome the people who have supported us from day one.

A good friend gave me a quote last night that feels very fitting after yesterday:

“The truth is like a lion. Set it free and it will defend itself.”

That’s exactly what happened in court yesterday

I represented myself in court setting today against a licensing solicitor. I held my own and our restaurant in Newbiggin was granted a full Alcohol licence !!!
