The former Canary and Linnet, now The Noon Gun, begins a new chapter............
Our Story
Sometimes life has a way of changing your plans...
When I travelled to England just before the Covid lockdown, I had one simple goal—to help my daughter settle into her new life.
None of us imagined that the world was about to stop.
Like so many others, I found myself unable to return home. What began as a temporary stay slowly became something much more. During those unexpected months, I fell in love with the UK, its beautiful countryside and, most importantly, its wonderful people.
England started to feel like home.
Having spent many years in the restaurant and coffee industry in South Africa with my husband Malcolm, we've always believed that food brings people together. We'd often dream about creating another special place where families could gather over good food, great coffee and warm hospitality.
Then one day, we saw it...
The old Canary & Linnet.
Many people drove past and saw an empty building.
We saw possibility.
We saw a beautiful village pub with so much history that simply needed someone to believe in it again.
So we took a leap of faith.
Since then, life has been filled with dust, paint, stripped floors, sleepless nights, endless decisions and more hard work than we ever imagined.
I've stripped walls.
I've sanded floors.
I've planned every room.
I've sourced furniture.
I've organised suppliers.
I've learnt more about renovating an old building than I ever expected!
It's been exhausting.....but every day brings us one step closer to opening our doors.
Today, the old Canary & Linnet is becoming The Noon Gun.
The new name reflects a little piece of our South African heritage while embracing our new home here in Norfolk. It's our way of bringing together two places that have shaped our lives.
Our dream is simple.
A welcoming family pub.
Fresh, homemade food.
Exceptional coffee roasted with passion.
A place where locals become friends, visitors become regulars and everyone feels at home.
We still have a little way to go, but every message of encouragement, every wave as people drive past and every kind word reminds us why we're doing this.
Thank you for following our journey.
We can't wait to welcome you through our doors.
See you soon,
Mandy & Malcolm
