Busy days ahead as we sort through this year’s harvest of apples, damsons, plums, beans, courgettes, chillies, tomatoes and medlars. 🍎🍅🌶️

Some will be served fresh, while the rest will be preserved, pickled, cooked, dried or transformed into something delicious for the months ahead.

Grown locally and absolutely nothing wasted. ♻️🌱

🌧️🌱 A drop of rain makes everything thrive!

Some lovely fresh produce coming out of the garden and heading straight into the pub kitchen ready for the weekend. 🌿🥬🍅

❓ QUIZ NIGHT TONIGHT

Just a reminder that, due to another concert in the Cavern tonight, quiz questions will start promptly at 9pm.

This means we should be able to get everything finished before the concert ends and avoid any interruptions!

🌱🏆 UK SUSTAINABILITY HERO FINALISTS! 🏆🌱

We’re incredibly proud to see The George, Castleton named as one of just four finalists in PubAid’s UK Sustainability Hero Award. 💚

From growing our own produce, to turning food waste back into soil with Greedy George, sustainability has become part of everyday life at The George. 🌱♻️

It’s great to see the little changes we’ve made over the years being recognised on a national stage.

Next stop… the House of Commons on 8th September! 🏛️🏆

And it goes without saying Well Done and a massive Thank You to Abi and all at PubAid for all the hard work that goes in promoting our Pubs 👏👏👏

🍎 IT’S THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN… APPLE SEASON! 🍏

One of our favourite times of the year at The George — when the garden and local produce really start earning their keep!

We’ve got loads of our own apples, plus a big thank you to the lovely locals who’ve been dropping their surplus apples off for us too. ❤️

Rest assured… they’ll ALL get used!

On the apple agenda so far:

🍎 Apple butter spread
🍏 Steamed Eve’s pudding
🐷 Simple homemade apple sauce for Sunday’s pork loin
🍞 Apple bread & butter pudding — and keeping with the waste-not theme, the bread cakes for this were sent over by GW Price, one of our suppliers, as they were surplus and would otherwise have gone to waste. A perfect second life for them! ♻️
🫐 Apple & blackcurrant crumble, using our homegrown blackcurrants that we froze earlier in the month
🧃 The juicer’s been back out, ready to make another batch of apple sorbet
🥧 Tarte Tatin incoming for the specials board!

And then there are the Damsons…
(They are two different trees in the pictures 😂😂 Plenty,plenty)

The tree branches are practically bending under the weight of them at the minute, so they’ll be getting picked next week. We’re already thinking about what we can make combining apples & damsons. 👀

And knowing us, there’ll probably be another few apple creations added to the list before we’re finished!

We absolutely love this time of year — grow it, pick it, preserve it, cook it, rescue it and make sure nothing goes to waste. 🌱🍎♻️

And a massive THANK YOU again to everyone who brings their surplus produce in for us — from our locals to our suppliers. It really does get put to good use. ❤️

🎉🍻 WE’RE OFF TO THE HOUSES OF PARLIAMENT… AGAIN! 🍻🎉

Some fantastic news for us this afternoon, The George has made the FINAL FOUR of the Community Pub Awards for the THIRD year running in the Sustainability Category!🏆

We’ve been incredibly lucky to come away as winners of the category for the past two years, so on Tuesday 8th September we’ll be making the trip back to the Houses of Parliament to see if we can somehow make it three in a row! 🤞🏆🏆🏆

The timing of today’s announcement seems particularly apt.
While the news came through, we were busy making another batch of our homemade lip balms, using up the last of the herbs we’ve grown ourselves this year. 🌿

It’s a small thing in the grand scheme of running a pub, but it sums up quite nicely what we try to do, grow what we can, use what we have, waste as little as possible and keep finding new ways of doing things.

To be recognised nationally for a third consecutive year means a huge amount to our little village pub and everyone who helps make it what it is.
