🎈🩸 THROWBACK TO MY FAVOURITE CAKE I’VE EVER MADE… WELCOME TO DERRY! 🩸🎈
Almost a year ago, I made this cake, and I STILL absolutely love it. 🖤
The funny thing? I had so many people, including other bakers, telling me it was AI-generated or enhanced with AI.
IT WASN’T!! NO AI. NO FILTERS. NO ENHANCEMENTS. Just me, my tools, edible materials and a frankly ridiculous amount of time and patience.
Every single detail was handmade and edible, apart from a couple of cocktail sticks supporting the legs of the Derry sign.
So, let me show you exactly how much work went into this monster of a cake! 👇
📺 THE TELEVISION
I made vegetarian Rice Krispie treats and built them up to create the shape of the TV, then coated the whole thing in fondant. I added an edible image from the IT movie before layering more fondant to create the details and give the television a more realistic finish. I then hand-painted and airbrushed the shading before adding corn syrup blood to tie it all together.
🪧 THE WELCOME TO DERRY SIGN
I created and edited the Welcome to Derry artwork to fit the cake perfectly. I made the sign from modelling paste, carefully hand-cutting the shape and leaving it to harden. The only non-edible elements were the cocktail sticks used to support the legs.
⛵ THE SS GEORGIE PAPER BOAT
Made entirely from modelling paste, textured by hand, then painted and airbrushed to get that worn, realistic look. I even hand-wrote “SS Georgie” to match the film!
🩸 THE DRAIN AND BLOOD EFFECT
I cut a small hole into the top of the cake and lined it with fondant. I then created a separate circular fondant disc for the drain cover, hand-painted with metallic edible powder to make it look realistic.
The blood filled the drain and spilled over the cake, recreating one of my favourite scenes from the film. I airbrushed the blood with black to give it a deeper, darker, oxidised appearance.
🌳 THE SEWER ENTRANCE
I carved a shallow recess into the front of the cake to create depth, then coated the area in fondant. I carefully calculated the size of the concrete entrance before hand-cutting the fondant, texturing it and bringing it to life with paint and airbrushing.
I topped the entrance with handmade fondant roots and branches, then created edible moss to give it that overgrown, decaying look. Naturally, that got more airbrushing, too!
🎈 THE RED BALLOON
Handmade from fondant and airbrushed to get the finish just right.
🪵 THE STONES, LOGS AND BASE
The stones and logs around the base were finished using the same texturing, painting and airbrushing techniques as the concrete entrance and branches, making sure everything looked like it belonged in the same scene.
🌊 AND NOW FOR THE BIT THAT MAKES ME HAPPIEST… THE CAKE BOARD!
This wasn’t just a board covered in fondant. I built up areas of fondant to create a rippled surface, then airbrushed layers of blue, green, brown and yellow to create that murky sewer-water effect.
Then came the piping gel! I poured it over the entire board to a depth of around 5mm before adding the logs and stones.
The result was that incredible, murky, wet-looking finish. I honestly couldn’t have been happier with how it turned out!
⏱️ TWO FULL DAYS OF WORK.
Two days making the decorations and decorating the cake. Every texture, every shadow, every tiny detail was planned and created by hand.
This is what people don’t always see when they look at a finished cake. The hours of designing, measuring, cutting, shaping, texturing, painting, airbrushing and problem-solving that go into making something like this.
There was no AI, no magic shortcut and no filter making it look better than it was. Just a whole lot of hard work, creativity and a slightly questionable obsession with horror. 🩸
This is still my favourite cake to date, and I’m ridiculously proud of it.
NOW TELL ME… WHAT DO YOU THINK? Would you have believed this was handmade and edible if you’d seen it without knowing how it was made? 👀🎈
