BRFFA Hidden Pairs – Blagdon Lake

Blagdon delivered some fantastic sport for today’s BRFFA Hidden Pairs, with 22 anglers enjoying a beautiful autumn day. A chilly, misty morning gave way to bright sunshine, scattered high cloud and temperatures reaching around 20°C.

Fish were caught early, feeding high in the water along the middle of the lake, from the dam right up to Rugmore Point. The action came and went through the morning, but by the afternoon the fishing was fantastic, with several anglers reaching their 16-fish limit.

The Hidden Pairs format adds an extra bit of fun: nobody knows who their partner is until the fishing is over, keeping everyone guessing until the results are revealed!

Floating lines and midge tips were popular choices, although Di3 Sweep and slow glass lines also produced fish. A fast figure-of-eight retrieve or popping bo***es through the ripple brought plenty of action, while static tactics proved effective later in the day.

Congratulations to our winning pairs:

🥇 Tim Wellman and Pete Bessell – 26 fish
🥈 Jeff Mason and Jesse Gale – 25 fish
🥉 Mark Kennedy and Gordon Smith – 25 fish

It should also be mentioned that individual top rod was James Graham
🏆🏆🏆Who bagged up by 2pm - brilliant angling from James .

Across all 22 anglers, including Andy Stones and Sebastian Pecchia fishing outside the competition, 222 fish were caught, giving a superb rod average of 10.1.

The finish line was in the iconic lodge where Lee Williams and his daughter laid on a fantastic spread for everybody to enjoy including homemade profiter roles, it was delicious.

A thoroughly enjoyable day, good company and another brilliant example of the famous Blagdon sport. Well done to everyone who took part!
Thanks to Luke Cox and all the Bristol Water staff that keep everyone safe and sound as well as providing an incredible fishery.

A fantastic day at Blagdon for our Youth Development Programme, with four enthusiastic youngsters taking their first steps into fly fishing.

The morning covered safety, an introduction to fly fishing equipment and how to put their tackle together, before heading out in boats onto the iconic Blagdon Lake. On the water, they learnt about boat safety and how to set up a drift, then put their new skills into practice.

Everyone had a great time, with a few trout and a pike caught along the way—a huge achievement and a memorable reward for their efforts!

All four achieved their Bronze and Silver awards, and we hope today marks the beginning of a rewarding new hobby. Well done to them all!

Thanks to all our coaches today , Andy Stones, Ron Howard, Bernie Weaver and Andy Hoffrock you give up your time for free to give back something and that’s pretty amazing !

Also a big thank you to Ethan & the Bristol Water staff for looking after us all, and of course to Luke Cox for his continued support and help with the YDP it’s massive we couldn’t do it without you! Blagdon is a truly special place to learn to fly fish .

🎣 BRFFA Youth Development Pathway Taster Session – Chew Valley Lake 🎣
What a fantastic day we had hosting our latest BRFFA Youth Development Pathway taster session at Chew Valley Lake! Despite the blustery conditions, the sun shone, spirits were high, and everyone had a brilliant time taking their first steps into the exciting world of fly fishing.
The youngsters spent time learning the art of fly casting, developing new skills and building confidence on the water. We also brought back our now-famous “Who Can Put Your Rod, Reel and Line Together?” Sprint Race… and, true to form, Ron Howard’s group crossed the finish line in last place! 🤣
As tradition dictates, coach Ron had to complete his 30-second hula hoop forfeit. Let’s just say… his hip action could do with a bit more practice! 😂
It was fantastic to welcome young people from Devon, Cheddar, and the local Chew Valley area. There is some incredible young talent out there—it simply needs the opportunity and support to flourish.
We hope the BRFFA Youth Development Pathway, with the fantastic support of Bristol Water Fisheries and their amazing team, can continue to provide exactly that: a welcoming place where the next generation of fly fishers can learn, grow, and thrive.
A huge thank you to everyone who attended, helped out, and made the day such a success. We can’t wait to see these young anglers back on the water again soon! 🎣☀️
