With Craft Festival Bovey Tracey just around the corner, we’ve been busy prepping enough carrot cake to feed an army!

We’ll be OPEN ALL WEEKEND, 10am - 5pm, find us on the first floor of the amazing MAKE Southwest, just a 2-minute walk from the Craft Festival itself.

It’s safe to say that this weekend is all about the craft…

✨Craft Festival - hundreds of brilliant UK makers
✨MAKE Southwest - three FREE ENTRY exhibitions showcasing all walks of craft, from the traditional and endangered crafts to the contemporary, as well as a shop full of stock from the best of the best Southwest craftspeople
✨Granite Elements - a small fringe craft market on all weekend in Bovey’s Methodist Hall

🌟Rodney’s Café - selection of hand*crafted* cakes and light bites. Okay, so we might be shoehorning ourselves into the theme a bit BUT truthfully, we make everything ourselves onsite with ingredients sourced from local suppliers - that’s why everything tastes so good 😉

Well, the people of Bovey certainly like their labradors and retrievers! That’s right, seal pup aka Molly, has won the for May 🦭

It was a close call between Molly and Moss but, by a dog’s whisker, Molly snatched the crown!

We’re secretly very pleased for her as she could do with a win… Molly’s now owner told us that Molly is 10 years old. Sadly, her dad passed away last year from lung cancer. He was a retired sergeant in the army and a full-time smoker, and the two of them truly looked after each other.
Unfortunately Molly now has a few lumps herself from living around the smoke for so many years. She’s slowing down a little and struggling more these days, and sadly there isn’t a lot that can be done for her now. Although honestly, looking at her, you’d never know because she’s still such a happy little thing!

Now, this isn’t the X Factor, so we didn’t want to skew the votes with a sob story. But we thought we’d share as a reminder that our furry friends don’t have a say in the world we provide for them - the food they eat, the air they breath, the temperature of the pavement they walk on - so we need to make sure we are making the right decisions for them.
Molly is a happy girl and had a beautiful friendship and loving happy life with her previous owner. She continues that happy and loving life with her new owner.

Thanks to Molly’s new mum for sharing her story 🖤

Last week we had an unannounced inspection from the Food Standards Agency… and we are happy to tell you that we haven’t let our standards drop - we received the full 5 marks again ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

You can rest safe in the knowledge that we put as much love and care into the cleanliness of our kitchen as we do into our homebaked sweet treats 🍰

Get your thumbs at the ready, it’s time to vote for your favourite dog to win Rodney’s cafe’s for May!
And a great opportunity to raise money for the amazing charity as all entrants needed to donate at least £1 to take part.

Read a little bit about each pooch in the comments below.

The winner will be announced on 4th of June - winning dog will get a big tasty treat of their choice and their humans will get a free beverage!

To cast your vote, like the post and comment with the name and/or number of your chosen pup!

1. Molly: These guys seem to have gotten confused and thought we run a ‘seal of the month’ competition. A very good seal nonetheless, but rules is rules.

2. Max: Max’s owner emailed in this picture of their ‘rescue cocker’. Unfortunately they neglected to specify who’s who in the photo - you’ll just have to use your best judgement.

3. Clover: In a cruel twist of fate, Clover is allergic to all spreadable margarines. She’s just thankful her parents didn’t call her ‘Bacon’.

4. Trig: Trig has the uncanny ability to tell the exact length of any triangle’s hypotenuse just by eyeballing it. This not from traditional schooling, but instead from years of personal research with laughing cow cheese, toast, oven ready hash browns and tortilla chips.

5. Moss: Moss is the chairdog of the Misheard Lyrics Club. Here, he re-enacts Sweet Dreams by Eurythmics: “Sweet dreams are made of cheese, who am I to dis-a-Brie”. In fact, most of Moss’ misheard lyrics involve cheese, must be something on his mind…

We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again, how lucky are we to be nestled on the first floor of such a creative and inspiring organisation?!

Our landlords put on the most amazing exhibitions, and we get the privilege of seeing the beautiful work every day 💙.
The current exhibition in their main gallery, Staying Alive, is all about the endangered heritage crafts of the Southwest. Traditional crafts have had a pivotal role in shaping British culture and industry but are now at risk of dying out. This exhibition celebrates and showcases some of the crafts at risk in the Southwest - what a tragedy it would be to lose them!

Staying Alive was co-curated by , a national charity set up to celebrate, support and safeguard traditional crafts skills.

Staying Alive runs until 4 July 2026 - once you’ve finished feasting your eyes, pop upstairs and feast your belly on our homebaked cakes! Open Tue -Sat, 10am - 5pm.

These springtime treats have been flying out! Gluten free rhubarb oaty goodness, topped with VEGAN crème anglaise. Made with rhubarb from rhubarb grown in Rob’s (aka Rodney’s) garden just a 10-minute walk from the cafe - you can’t get much more local than that!

Get them while Rob’s rhubarb supply lasts…

The winner of for April, in all her glory - like the baroque oil painting she is - ZARA 🎉

Zara wins an extra special treat based on her likes or dietary requirements as well as her polaroid proudly on display on our 2026 ‘best doggos’ wall of fame. Her owner will receive a free hot beverage of their choice - mainly for being blessed with the opposable thumbs that enables the ability to take a photo on a smart phone.

As the name suggests, this is a competition we run monthly… to be in with a chance to win:

🐾own a dog (or borrow a friend’s)
🐾use your opposable thumbs to take a photo of your pooch at your next visit to Rodney’s Cafe
🐾donate minimum £1 to the brilliant animal charity
🐾email the photo to [email protected]

There’s one heck of a tasty pasta salad on our menu right now!
Black olives, sun dried tomatoes, toasted pine nuts, green pesto, fresh basil & rocket - fresh and full of flavour!
Enjoy it on our sunny roof terrace - if you close your eyes, you can almost imagine you are at a marina in Italy 🕶️

It’s the end of the month and that can only mean one thing… it’s time! Get looking, get cooing, get voting!

We’ve got some absolute gems for you to choose from for April. To vote all you need to do is:
🐾 like the post
🐾 pick your favourite
🐾 and put their name and/or number in the comments!

There are a couple of pairs in this month - so if you are voting for a duo, you are voting for the 2 dogs together under the same number.

We’ll tot up the votes at 10pm on 1st May and announce the winner on the 2nd.

Winners receive an extra special treat and their humans get a free beverage of their choice!

This clearly a bit of fun but also helps raise funds for as each entrant must donate at least £1 to participate.

Read about each dog:

1. Zara: mercilessly teased in her younger years, Zara has opted for expensive, ergonomic lifts in her shoes, giving her the extra height she always dreamed of. And as you can see, it’s been a game changer.

2. Barney: divorcee Barney is looking for a new pawtner to enjoy long walks on the beach with, long walks on the beach with and long walks on the beach with. Having said that, he has lowered his standards recently so if you neither enjoy long walks or beaches you are probably still in with a chance.

3. Dusty & Fuzz: are your classic good cop, bad cop combo - their interrogations always start with Dusty offering you a gravy bone, while Fuzz stands silently at the back of the room holding a pair of nail clippers. Unfortunately, this technique has been successful exactly zero times and they are still no closer to finding out who stole their tennis ball.

4. Dillon: we wondered when it might happen… Dillon is our first AI generated entrant for dog of the month. We know, it’s so hard to tell! But if you look really carefully you can see that he’s got 6 toes on his back left paw.

5. Polly & Pippa: have incorrectly assumed that this photo was going to be entered into the saddest dog of the month competition. Maybe you should vote for them just to give them something to look forward to.

Springing in with a new special… toasted bread topped with sweet pickled cucumbers and tangy whipped feta, sprinkled with fresh dill and drizzled with olive oil 🤤. Perfect marriage of sharp and sweet.

This one isn’t suitable for the vegans this time, but it can be made gluten free!
