Barking parkrun

Barking parkrun A free, weekly, timed 5k walk/jog/run at 9am every Saturday in Barking Park, Longbridge Road, IG11 8TA. Open to all ages and abilities.

parkrun is not a race against other runners, but a 5k timed run and it can really be whatever you want it to be, whether that's for fun or as part of a training plan. It offers an opportunity for all the local community, male or female, young or old, to come together on a regular basis to enjoy this beautiful park and get physically active into the bargain. We want to encourage people to jog or ru

n together irrespective of their ability – this event is truly open to all and best of all it really is FREE! Taking part is easy – just register before your first ever parkrun. The great thing is that you only ever need to do this once! Then just set your alarm for Saturday morning and get yourself there! After the run, if you don’t have to get off straight away, there will be the chance to socialise with everyone in a local cafe, to maybe swap stories about your run that day, chat to other runners over a cup of tea or coffee and just be an important part of this new running community. So whether you are a complete novice looking to get yourself started on your own "running journey" or a seasoned athlete wanting to use this as a part of your training schedule, you’re welcome to come along and join us.

With temperatures rising this weekend, please consider leaving your parkrun pooches at home for their welfare and safety.

In case you missed the email, here are parkrun’s five top tips for parkrunning in the summer.

After weeks of unpredictable weather with heatwaves followed by wind and rain, summer has finally arrived! The sunshine and warmer temperatures are wonderful, but being active outdoors can be more challenging on hot days. To help you make the most of your summer parkruns and junior parkruns, here....

The temperature for Barking parkrun on Saturday looks like being 25 degrees at 9.00am. Cooler than now but still hot!

We will be sharing guidance on parkrunning in hot weather from parkrun HQ when we receive it but please be ready to follow all the usual advice:

Wear light coloured, loose, moisture-wicking clothes, and a sun hat or visor;

Wear sunscreen;

Hydrate beforehand and bring some cool drink. We’ll have some emergency water but there won’t be enough for everyone;

Have a thought for your furry friend. The safest option is often to leave dogs at home;

Heat will slow you down - start slow and don’t chase a personal best;

Seek shade if you can. If you feel unwell (dizziness, chills, nausea) slow down, walk, or stop! Seek help if you need it.

Keep safe and hopefully see you on Saturday.

The last Saturday of the month is coming so we look forward to welcoming 5k Your Way Move Against Cancer back to Barking for their monthly run.
For anyone affected by cancer, 5k Your Way offers a welcoming and supportive community alongside parkrun. Whether walking, jogging, running or volunteering, everyone is welcome. Even if you're not up to physical challenge, please join us for an after event coffee.
{Editor's note - the picture isn't from Barking though our course does include a lovely lakeside run.)
