Cabinet Secretary for Climate Action and Rural Affairs, Gillian Martin for Aberdeenshire East, joined a meeting of Scotland's National Agritourism Strategy Board last week.

Scottish Agritourism shared evidence gathered from 110 agritourism and farm retail businesses, which highlighted barriers to profitability and growth. The significant impact of the costs, time and stress of planning on business development emerged as a key issue.

A roundtable discussion followed, centring on actions within the Scottish Government’s remit to help unlock further potential in agritourism and farm retail.

Eight young farmers also joined the meeting to share an in-person perspective with Ms. Martin and the agencies around the table.

Following the meeting, Ms. Martin, said: “I was pleased to meet the members of the Scotland's National Agritourism Strategy Board and hear directly from young farmers about the opportunities and challenges facing their businesses, for which I am grateful.

As we continue our engagement with the sector this evidence will help inform our understanding of the barriers that businesses face and the ways we can support sustainable growth in Scotland’s rural economy.”
